So here's the story ....I don't know if you remember but about a week ago a friend and I went shooting..
He was the one who was using a Low Wall and was breach seating his bullets , I was using a 1903 Springfield with battle sights...
When we got through and put our stuff away there was an extra gun case on one of the tables..

I asked him what it was..he said take a look...I did ..inside was a Winchester Model 54 Bolt action 30-30..
serial number and barrel date placed the date of manufacture in 1928 or 1929..the bore was excellent ..
the bluing good ..the stock shows signs of use through the last 90 years.... it has a Lyman rear sight mounted on it...the original bead front sight is there....

"Nice piece" I said...:D:D:D:D..."Always sorry I got rid of the one I had 30 years ago".. "I know" he said ...."you were always talking about it so I thought I would buy this one and see what they are all about"....

Of course ..I had to ask him if he was willing to part with it...he hadn't shot it yet..I told him if that was the case then now was the time ...

So yup ...it's mine..

How does it shoot?...well with the 315's it's a 1'-1 1/4" @ 100 yds all day long..as long as my eyes hold out and the light is good.

Tried some 407 Mods and 466 this morning..forgot to smoke the dang bead until the last two shots..
It seems to like the 466...:)

What a beautiful rifle !

The 30-30 and cast bullets are made for each other.

Ir's not bad concidering it's age...trying to decide if refinishing the stock will hurt the value..

Yes Ben...in anything that will lock up tight..the 30-30 is great...

So Ben...1 1/4" at 100 yds wirh a 30-30 rifle sounds good to me....same size group with a TC..is amazing to me...

Thanks Paul...
Ben forgot to mention a couple of things:
1. The leade or throat on this is super tight or short...like you Contender
I have to seat the bullets WAY down in the neck to get them to chambered..
2. From what I can tell with the lube star ..the barrel has 6 grooves...

You have a good eue...
They are in fact stocks for a Springfield..one is a 1903 single bolt...I believe was used until 1912...the other is a minty Remington 1903 a3...again good eyes.

You may need to send the stock to me and let me shorten it a bit with my radial arm saw.

OK...Sounds good Ben....but just out if curiousity.. where is "a bit " on a ruler...?

I need to take some material out of the back side of the grip..with my thumb in the hole my finger just makes the trigger..

I know a guy with a M54 carbine in 30WCF. It has been my intent to try to make it mine, but so far, no luck.

If you have a goal of enjoying the rifle and keeping it, a nice refinish would be fine.

If you plan to sell it someday soon, Original is the name of the game.

So true Ben....my friend and I have been trying to figure out how to atach a Fecker scope to this without drilling additional holes..very strange they came with holes tapped for Receiver sights and two addition holes in the forward receiver ring...
Guess you were suppose to get the barrel tapped yourself if you wanted a scope..
Makes sense if you had a 30Gov. but a 30-30?
