In the day of the 54' , consideration as to optics was probably a pretty low priority with Winchester.

Again true...I just got through reading an article on the 54's...seems like Stith and Herters made two piece mounts ...the rear piece was attached where the receiver sight would go and the front where the two holes are in the receiver ring....they were high enough to get the scope out of the way of the bolt and and safety ...

Another set required that you remove the rear sight insert a block into the dovetail and screw a block on the receiver..

One enterprising guy took a dummy slide for the receiver sight and screwed a block to it and one on the receiver ring...quite ingenious IMO..

I imagine if you wanted a scope on your Model 54 , 30-30 Win., rifle in 1931, you were forced to be pretty ingenious.

When it comes to scopes, scope bases, scope rings , etc we have it made today and many of us don't realize it ! !

Stith mounts and a scope are a pricey proposition if you can find one.

Got a set coming...$140.00 .. a NOS set..complete .....for a Weaver J2.5..it uses the holes for the receiver sight and the rear sight dovetail ...now I need a weaver j 2.5 ..anyone have a half way decent one they would part with..
or any other 3/4" scope?

20160813_124629.jpg So....I guess putting the Boyds stock on the 700 may work....I loaded u ten rounds and went to the range to test it...first group was so so ..trying to get the right grip on the stock and placement of the rear bag didn't make for anything spectacular..but once I settled in the second group was about what I was hopping for...

Outstanding Dan!!!!!

Paul

Paul thank you ....what was really outstanding was someone my age trying to introduce themselves to a thumb hole stock ....that must have been a sight to see ...I'm glad everyone was over in the pistol range .....I didn't know what to do with my thumb..

Really nice all around the guns, thread, shooting, all of it!

I'll admit my only thumbhole (Tc omega) felt weird at first. Now, it's a dream though settles in right nice like. They point straight real natural when they fit you. Still like standard stocks better for certain uses though. The thumbhole don't feel right when spot & stalk hunting for me, it's more for sit and wait/bench use.

I'd be happy with them both!

SPOT ON .FB !!!! This TO stock is rock solid and a natural pointer on the bench...might also be good standing...but a regular stock feels better all around...MO...
Thanks for the input..Dan
P.S....you are also right about having to fit you....they do require some customizing to fit you...kind of like handgun grips...

I've admired Harry Lawson's Cochise Thumbhole since I was a teen. It looks fantastic! When I decided to buy an Omega, I tried both styles of stocks. While the thumbhole felt pretty good, I KNEW that there was no way that I could shoot it left handed. There have been hunting situations where shooting from the opposite shoulder was the only way to make the shot...

20160817_115515.jpg 20160813_171429.jpg So ... back to the Winchester 54

The bead front sight was giving me fits..IT SHINES...smoked it is workable...

Thought I remembered that an early style Winchester 94 blade was pretty much the cat's behind.

So I scrounged one up and installed it on the 54...

I tried it out today...

The beautiful thing about these is that they are the same width as a standard 100yd SB target at 100 yds...makes for pretty good sight picture..( for awhile)..then the eyes start to go..in the meantime it can be rewarding...

Once again ...scopes are for what ?.....;););)

Dan,
You never cease to amaze me with your "iron sight" groups! Needless to say I'm Always impressed.
Great shooting! Now for these sights, what diameter was your aiming bull at 100yds ...if you don't mind me asking?
