Springfield 840, 22" 30-30 Win for Cast Bullets?

Any opinions on the Springfield 840, 22" 30-30 Win for cast bullets? I haven't seen it yet but, have it on hold at the LGS after seeing the listing online for $175 "out the door". I believe it comes with receiver sights (RS?). Should be a clone of the Savage 340, I think. Sun Optics sells a side mounted scope mount at Midway for it that uses four original screws on the left side. I'll wait to see what you guys say before going to look at it.

I would have a hard time passing on a 340 Savage, or clone, for 175 bucks. Should be really good with cast.

Stop waiting and go look already!

Have had a couple of 340's. They both seemed to have a preference for the 150 lee GC, over a stiff load of 3031.

I have a Savage 340 30-30 and it likes the Lee 180gr over 28gr of IMR4064. Mine has receiver sights as well.

I have the 340 also and a stevens 25 they both shoot the rcbs 30-150-fngc very well.
I also shoot an old walt melander NEI loverign [copy] design in them that will run up over jacketed velocity's without a hitch.
love that walt mold.... fill, open, shake, fill.
the rcbs is a sweetie too, open close open close and all of the 30-30's here shoot it like they are supposed to.

I don't have any of those molds! I have a bunch of other 30's to try in it, though. Lee's, Lyman's RCBS's and NOE's to start the fun off with!

I've always drooled over the Savage 340's in the racks over the years. Just didn't have a practical use for one. Older now so, who cares, I just want one (or an 840, like one) to shoot for fun! Awful whimsical for a guy from NH, huh? Hey, it'll save powder over my other rifles, that'll be my excuse!

Last summer, while playing with my old youth model, H&R Topper 30-30, I found that I really enjoyed shooting the Lee 113gr stoked with just 3.7gr Bullseye, for fun.

those should work, work very well actually.
I wanna see your first 50yd 1" group with the new rifle.
I know they will do it with the open sights and cast without too much trouble.

You guys are all enablers! I just got back from picking it up. I'll try to post a photo or two tomorrow. I paid an extra $10 for the Maine state tax instead of waiting for another day to transfer it over in my state of NH. The (RS) notation that I hoped meant "receiver sight" was just "rifle sight". It has a well done, restored blonde birch stock. The magazine looks pristine. The bluing is about 80% with some pepper speckles of rust here and there. There's some light rust close in to the barrel band edge, too. The bore looks nice and crisp, although not cleaned. This rifle has not been shot much at all. The trigger is stiff at about 6 or 7 pounds of pull. The rifles' sights are just simple ramp type sights. Overall, well worth the $185 total.

make sure that front band is tight.
then tighten it a little more, they shoot a whole lot better that way.
I tried the other direction thinking of floating the barrel umm tighten the band down.

Stock looks clean. A bit blonde for my taste but in good shape.

How does she shoot?

That is a very clean looking rifle. Stock and metal all look to be in very good shape.
You got a really good deal.

It was kind of windy and gusty today for shooting a light bullet and load. I think this group could have been a one-holer if it was calm out.Springfield 840 011 (800x600).jpg

Brad, too blonde for my taste, too! Dark stain on a birch stock looks cheesy too, though. What do you guys think about sanding it down and giving it a passive green stain, then Tru Oiling it.
