A bullet with a nose designed to ride the top on the lands.

A "bore riding" bullet is a throat-fitted loverin style slug that is insta-sized by acceleration in the throat (by obturation slug up) ..... followed by push sizing the throat sized slug down into the fully engaged rifling to become a true bore riding projectile.

They are a figment of over-optimistic bullet caster's imaginations beyond all but the most sedate velocities.

Historically attributed to J.H. Barlow and a couple of notable others, the concept is a two-diameter bullet with a parallel nose sized to fit the bore diameter and a parallel body portion sized just larger than the rifle's groove dimension. Since the key to consistent grouping with rifle bullets is a geometrically straight launch into the barrel, the nose fitting snugly and straight into the lands when the cartridge is chambered gives a good probability of the rest of the bullet following straight into the barrel and promotes the concept of a straight launch. It works to a point, but exact fitment can be frustrating and the narrow land tops of most modern rifles do not provide much actual support to guide the bullet nose straight.

This would also explain all of the extra shoulder/neck pain and related issues.

Here is a photo of a Lyman 311284. This bullet was originally intended to be used in the 30-40 Krag. It had a nose that cast undersized at .297”. The driving bands cast at .309”. It was too small for my 30-06, so I sold it.

I bought another Lyman bore rider, the 311290. It was also too small but powder coating added a few thousandths and it works well with 16grs of 2400.

If you do a little searching on this site you will find quite a few posts by Ben about bore riding bullets, he is a big fan of the style. Long and heavy 30 cal bullets going slow.

bore rider.
notice the nose versus the body.

non bore riding.
all of the engraving surface is on the body.

there are other types and style for rifles.
the Loverign designs are tapered from front to back to snuggle up in the throat, but still have enough base diameter to fill the entire barrel.
they may have a portion or portions that are a bore rider, and others that engrave the rifling but don't fill the grooves fully,

That's three pics from Lamar in one post. Am I the only one to see the significance of this? Jax must be involved....

I got copy and paste down pat.

I'm fairly positive that's one of Ben's Pic's on the bottom, I lifted it off a search site I use.

Couple More Pics of the 358009 Cast.

The left most are the 358009 then moving two bullets to the right you see another bore rider. This is a Lyman 311440.
