An old "Bob"

waco

Springfield, Oregon
When my uncle died back in 1999 my Aunt sold off all of his guns and casting/reloading stuff. I was able to buy all of the casting/reloading stuff along with an old Ruger M77 tang safety .22-250.
His son, my cousin wanted the matching rifle in .257 Roberts.
Fast forward about 14 years. My cousin dies from kidney failure (Born with this)
I ended up buying this twin to my .22-250 from my Aunt. It was made in 1982-83 and wears an old Redfield 3x9 Tracker scope.

I'm scrubbing all of the copper out of it now. I have a new box of Nosler brass, a bot of 100gr Speer Hot Core bullets, and a slue of powder that should work well with this caliber.

It's not a rifle I have shot much or intend to shoot much. It will not leave me until my death though. Same with my uncles reloading bench and presses. A lot of sentimental value.

I'll stick with the Saterlee ladder test to pick a load. This just plain works...….

that's in waay too nice of shape.

I got a 30" wide 4x4 hanging on the wall that I shot with my 257 Bob.
I had been hunting with cast bullets in the 30-30 all season long, but we had to go do some stuff over at the in-laws.
my BIL was going to be there and wanted to see my featherweight model 70.
I took it along to show him and we went up hunting for the afternoon [in the wife's new Tahoe]
I ended up shooting Him well within 30-30 range, heck well within anything center fire range really [as in I couldn't find anything but fur in the scope close]
as soon as I pulled the trigger Dawn yelled down the hill 'I'll be in the truck,, your on your own,,,,,,,,
you dickhead'.

she had no idea how big or small he was, but she knew where I was and since we had hauled a deer out of there before but with more help, she was in no mood to do it with just the two of us..

The 257 Roberts has long been my favorite deer/antelope round, followed closely by the 250 Sav. My Bob is a Ruger MkII, it's done very well with H4350 and 100 Interlocks at 3050 fps. Lately I've been trying other bullets for when I run out of the Interlocks that Hornady so rudely discontinued. So far the 100 Ballistic tip and the 115 Partition have been looking good. 4451 has also been making the shopping list for the future.
My son runs one in a gorgeous Kimber Classic Select, upgraded factory wood on that thing is awesome. The action is quite a bit shorter than the Ruger so we have to make sure to keep the ammo seperate.

if I ever run into a decent priced Bob, I will own it! (Same for 250 Savage!) Bucket list items for me. Congrats!

a good bullet for the 25 cals is the Speer 100gr boat tail controlled expansion.
I have been using it in the 25-06 at about 3-K fps.
a little less speed wouldn't hurt it any.
the tracking jobs have been pretty easy so far, one deer made it two jumps,,,, that's the record.

If I ever set my mind to having a bolt rifle built, I would have a tough time choosing between the 250 Savage or 257 Roberts.

Well, I sent back this year's deer tag to the Fish & Fauna Kommissar in Sacramento today. Season ended on 11/11, and now the state has both successful and unsuccessful/did not hunt tagholders sent in the report cards. If not returned by Jan. 31, then you can't draw or apply for a tag the next season. Mark me "Unsuccessful", and I'll be back next year.

The whole thing slipped my mind, owing to some distractions presently keeping the dull times to a minimum. I checked the E-mail earlier, and lo and behold Cal-DFW sent a reminder note to apply for the 2019 Fishing License. This prompted me to haul out the deer tag from my hunting pack and stuff it into an envelope for mailing. I ordered the fishing license and its added amendments (Ocean Enhancement Stamp and 2nd Rod Permit for freshwater lakes), and during checkout I saw that the deer tag report could be sent online now. OK, I won't remember that next year, either.

I had a Model 70 in 257 Roberts that I shot in the CBA cast bullet "quarter bore" postals for three years. I won it three years in a row with group sizes less the half of anyone else. It is a great cast bullet cartridge! With a long heavy 25/35 bullet and a medium powder, like A2400, you can shoot grouse at 100 yards all day long. Congratulations and keep it forever.

That’s a great looking rifle Walter. It’s amazing how much more effort was put into making a nice blue finish back in the day.

The blueing looks like you can almost see yourself in it.

Obviously sorry about your cousin Waco but,a very nice and fitting journey for your new rig.

I've been the repository for all the family's guns and tools.Just never was any discussion in the matter...... I'm starting to give away both to the boys while we can enjoy seeing them use them. Gave a 308 away yesterday, and it blasted a perfect 10X shot on a deer for my son this a.m.

oscarflyter, After the third year, nobody would entry the match anymore. I sold the rifle to one of my best friends who is a Winchester collector. It was a nice honest used rifle that he says he gets out and looks at once in a while. He is an old guy with no relatives and all of his guns will go on the market when he passes on. Keep an eye out they are out there so one is waiting for you. Ric

My Shooting buddy , Ed, has Ruger 77's in 250 Sav & 257 Rob. Get this not one each but 2 each! He had/ has a bad habit of buying 2 identical rifles every time he gets a rifle! He shoots one and locks one away. Seriously ....I think he has a sickness & I know he still does because I recently found a guy selling two GEW 98's and told him and he bought both! Seriously he put one in his safe and plans on shooting the other!
Any getting back to where I should have started: He shoots Light Velocity cast bullet loads with both the 250 Sav and 257 Bob ( from bullets I cast for him) and yes they are extremely accurate with cast

I bought a box of Speer 100gr Hot Cores
Sounds like a powder along the line of 4350 or so is what I want?

Depends. Are you looking at Al, iron, or brass?

The Al will be the lightest mould, the brass the heaviest.

Wipe Out is your friend. Carbon-copper-carbon-copper......

I bought a 220 Swift model 70 years ago. Owner said it was shot out. After several sessions of WO it looked good. Swapped it for a 225 with the same issue. It cleaned even better. Should have kept both.

25-06 is my only .257. I run a 117 or a 120 around 3100+. AA3100 was the powder I liked, it is now discontinued. I tried all of the "go to" powders. No speed or accuracy to my liking.
