1898 krag what caliber?

i'll be building it few years.....

i have two 1898 spr armory actions without bolts. i want to do a 22 hornet and the 405 JES. i have 1898 spr armory in 30-40 krag that i love. i going to get(as soon as my buddy gets a weekend off, he travels a good bit) a 1898 spr armory in 30-40 krag too. the barrel may have been shot out, it may need a bolt and the stock is disgusting but i figure it needs a stripping and sanding and some min-wax antique oil finish.

besides the lug crack(if it does, fine, its needs a bolt, if not, also fine) what caliber/dies should i use? i already have a 30-40 krag, so the .308" caliber is out. the 35 krag is great but no one makes the dies, if they do, its a 2 year wait. the 25 krag is also out, i am going to build a 93 spanish mauser in 257 roberts. i also am building the 1895 Chilean mauser in 6.5x57, so no 6.5 krag. the 375 krag is an option but i already have a 9.3x57 in husky m96.

the 7mm krag AI(i don't want to mixed up a 30-40 or 7mm/30-40 case so i choose the AI) is also a good choice. CH-4D makes the dies(also the 375 krag). also i have shot many deer with the 7 mauser, 7-08 and the 7x30 waters. the 7 mauser was given to my son, the 7x30 waters is my dad's and the 7-08 is in my safe(i haven't shot it for years).
i'm leaning towards a 7mm krag ai but its not set in stone.

what calibers do you choose for me?

The 9,3x57 is actually a pretty good option for the Krag, due to the low pressure standard of the cartridge.
Here is a link to a norwegian gunsmith who makes some nice custom krags, by the way. The language will be incomprehensible to you, but if you scroll down the page you’ll see some nice photos :)

At large, whereabouts unknown.
Would the Krag bolt accept a .303 Brit case? I see that they're slightly larger at the head/flange. If so, a whole new world might just open up for you with the myriad .303 wildcats.

If it were I, I'd do a wildcat .400 bore .408 groove in a full length 30/40 case AND ONLY LOAD BLACK POWDER. Then you are always safe with the single lug and have about the equal to 40/70 Sharps Straight. You can use 40/70 SS dies or .405 Winchester dies in a pinch. FWIW

yes, a 303 is acceptable. so is the 444 marlin.

22&338 are about all that is skipped .
I like the idea of a 40-40 too .

the 22 krag isn't what i call a deer gun. besides, i'll have a 22 hornet. the 338 krag is interesting, but.....i guess it wasn't for me.

So take the 444 leave the barrel heavy profile and back bore the muzzle for a 32 ga wad lock extended turkey choke for a moose/grouse gun . You get all of the 44 Special/mag/rifle choices and brass 410 just for grins .

Im a 35 cal nut. 35/40 (Krag) is unfortunate about dies. When I built my Whelen I altered it slightly going off the shoulder of the 270 as I had buku cases. Once chambered, I sent
My reamer to Redding ( pretty sure it was 1986) and they "chambered my dies" to/with my reamer.

I agree is respect for the old action.

Maybe this can help?

i've been thinking about the 35/40 krag dies. i could buy a 35 cal neck sizing die and be done with it. but what do use for seating die? and a lee fcd? the only 35 caliber i have is a 35/30-30 dies that ch-4d makes.(win m94 35/30-30)

Me I would go to a 375-40 and have a rifle I could count on for most anything...... But then you have that 9.3 57 .......... But I do not.. And aliber 375 anything still calls to me but not as badly as a 40-41 some caliber.
