22 hornet, what to build?

most of the work is going to be my gunsmith. i'm handicable, meaning i have one hand and one leg to do the rifle.

i was at my bench when it hit me. i was going to use a 1898 spr armory action to make my 22 hornet(don't care if its a single shot), but i have a 93 spanish mauser action , including a cut military stock(which makes it "cute baby rifle"), that i was going make a 257 roberts out of it.

i have two 1898 spr armory without bolt actions and one 1898 spr armory rifle(without sights and it was bubbaed). i was going to do a 9.3 krag(9.3/30-40 krag) and a 405 JES. the other action was going to be a 22 hornet. i've had a 6.5 krag on my brain for a couple of weeks, so the 22 hornet vs 6.5 krag is on my mind too.

the krag has the advantage of being rimmed. the 93 mauser causes alot of problems, not to mention the feeding. i'll take a single shot 93 mauser every day and twicet on sunday. is it possible to do a single shot 93 spanish mauser in 22 hornet? if so, what do you need to do it?

yes, it will be cast boolits only.

I have a Savage 340 Project in 22 Hornet. I have all Parts but magazine. Im wanting to make it a single shot. So going to make a plug/ shelf where magazine would be to hold a shell and allow feeding into chamber. I am going this route because the barrel is about 1.25" is dia and 24" long. Its never ever gonna be carried. Its gonna be a range gun.

Good luck with your project!

There use to be a company that made single shot adapters that you put in place on top of the spring loaded follower. They were basically center feed troughs. I dont know if they made them for the 93 Mausers. It wouldn't be that hard of a piece to make out of Delrin though. Something like the Calhoun or Original Bob Sled single shot adapters. The bolt face/extractor would seem to be a bigger herdel. I've not done this so mostly thinking in print here.

I think the Mausers are feed from magazine only unless you change
the extractor in some way.
All of the ones I have are feed from magazine only.

I have a PTG single shot load device that fits both my Swedish Mauser and 03A3, and when I had the Yugo re-worked K98k and Model 24/47 it worked in them, as well. Sharp Shooter makes a device, too.

Turn rifle bottom side up, remove the magazine floor plate, spring and follower, drop in the device, re-install the floor plate, spring and follower.
Presto, chango. No modification, no fuss, no muss.

The bolt face is the major obstacle here. Modifying the bolt face to a larger cartridge is easy, as it involves removing material only. Modifying to a smaller bolt face is much more complex. In a push-feed bolt which surrounds the case head, it might be done using a bushing. But on a mauser bolt...... sounds complex, and expensive. I think I would choose a cartridge with the same rim diameter as the original cartridge. Which, in .224- caliber, limits the options (22-250, .22 BR).

I used to have a .225 Winchester on a 95 Mauser action. Extraction worked fine. I occasionally had to "pinch" the bolt to get the extractor to snap over the rim of a chambered cartridge.

I've seen (at a gunshow) a 93 modified for the .22 Savage HP. I don't know what action mods were done, or how reliably that one extracted.

Once my son brought home a late model Win 1885 Low Wall Hornet I got the itch myself. However, factory rifles are a bit of a mix or match deal. My bullet of choice would be the 40 V-Max or B-Tip but many of the rifles out there have the slow twist barrel that won't run those bullets. Others have magazines too short to hold those same bullets. A custom built Low Wall would be just the ticket, but I'm not spending that kind of money on one.

CZ Hornets have a reputation for tight bores not necessarily a bad thing. They also have a 1-16 twist rate. Depending on what cast bullet weights your planning on that may be a factor.

I am biased. Being 82, and divesting myself of my rifles, my #3 Ruger in 22K Hornet was one of the hardest to let go of. It went to a good friend who has now turned it into a full stock manlicker. I had this rifle for many years, one of the early #3's. Some 20 or so years ago I had it K'd. Over the years, it became my 200 yd and under p-dog shooter. Longest kill with it was 240 witnessed, 35 gr jacketed. Over the years, I would estimate I killed over 2000 plus with this rifle(carbine). The gunsmith who K'd my hornet built beautiful hornet and Bee's out of 310 Cadet rifles. Before I had the #3 K'd I limited my reguler hornet shots to about 150-175.

150-175 yards is my limit with the Hornet as well--jacketed or cast (Lyman #225438). I have punched paper with the Lyman at 200 yards, but even rats deserve a decisive ending--and I don't know if that RN casting has much left past 150 yards or so. I put a couple jackrabbits down at 100-125 yards with the "438"--44 grains checked and lubed, 9.0 grains of 2400 enabled 2400 FPS (just like the powder can said!) and respectable accuracy for eyeballed bullets. I haven't quite been able to beat out j-word accuracy with the castings, and I still haven't run the Condor Cuddlers by Barnes yet. That #225438 will be tried with the unleaded metal, for the same reason people climb mountains--BECAUSE IT'S THERE.
