IMG_1149.JPG IMG_1148.JPG IMG_1147.JPG IMG_1146.JPG I was finally able to get out and do some shooting with my brother yesterday. It was very cold and very foggy. Temperature was around 25°. At least there was no wind. You might have seen a different post I had done about the new hollow point mode for my 45 ACP. I loaded these with six grains of universal and they were shot through my 5 inch Kimber 1911. Sized, lubed, and ready to load these bullets weighed approximately 210 grains. Out of the 5 inch barrel they averaged 850 ft./s. I was able to pretty consistently hit a piece of steel 14" x 16" at 50 yards offhand which is pretty good for me. Next up was the NOE 30 Hunter shot out of my Remington model 788 chambered in 308. I had two different loads with me. One load was 10 1/2 g of red dot and the other load was 15 grains of SR 4759. The spot we were shooting yesterday only allowed us to shoot at a distance of 50 yards. The bench we were using was not the most stable thing in the world and like I said I was very very cold so this did not help my groups very much :) I had some flyers but was pretty happy with the results. The red dot load group ride in at three quarters of an inch and the SR 4759 load was just under 1 inch. Good enough for plinking around camp I suppose. The red dot load average 1324 ft./s and the SR 4759 load average 1259 ft./s Now on to the 30-06 load. This is an NOE312290 bullet. Sized to .311" lubed with 2500+ and BLL. The only load worth mentioning was the IMR 4064 @ 32gr. I had a flyer here to that opened up the group quite a bit. Average velocity for five rounds was 1668 ft./s The group measure just under 1 1/4 inches 45 shots. All in all it was a good place to start and we had a lot of fun and I learned a lot. Back to the loading bench to try some more combinations.

25° is very cold?

Looks like a few loads with some serious potential.

Well that's not cold except in a relative sense, but it is cold enough where you might see certain lubes affect accuracy. Just keep the lube effect in mind when shooting groups...

It is cold enough to keep me home unless sunny and no wind.

Fun, ain't it? Love those popgun loads. Is your Kimber a bushingless design?

25° is hellish freezing cold in my part of Texas, and with wind, forget it. Now in Colorado, during the day, with two feet of snow on the ground, that is Tee-shirt weather even for me. Altitude and humidity is everything. What blows my mind is the people who live and manage to function on the north Atlantic coast where the dampness totally penetrates everything and it is windy, miserable cold, and salty on top of that.

it's amazing how humidity makes the cold miserable, it doesn't help the heat any either, but it just makes the cold cut clear to the bone.
