30-30 - Do they make.....

Does someone make a reasonably priced mould for a 30-30 that does not cast gas check bullets?

Define "reasonably priced"

For a C-note Accurate can produce you any number of excellent ones, or a custom one of your own design.

NOE might have some IF they are in stock.

The Lee 311-100-2R is very good for light-duty loads in my .30-30s, but not recommended for tubular magazines unless you blunt the nose with a flat top punch in a lubrisizer.

I would have zero qualms about taking a 5/16” drill bit and removing the gas check shank on a two cavity Lee 309-150-F.

At $25.00 for the mold, and ten minutes at the drill press. It’s about the cheapest option out there. I did this to a Lee 324-175-1R, and it shoots fine.

I know that Ben has drilled out the shank on many molds and has reported great results.

I have done several like Josh, 8 mm and 30s, it works best for me to leave the power off and turn the chuck by hand. The 8 mm shot a 295 in a milsurp match with 8.2 grains of clays, the 5 that missed the 10 ring were close 9s so yes cheap easy and accurate

Define "reasonably priced"

As much as I love Accurate moulds, "reasonably priced" means in a non-Accurate price range. The thing is, I don't even own a 30-30, and I just want to be able to load for it for someone who does. I picked up a set of used Lyman dies for $22, so this whole thing is being done on the cheap.

Bill,
I pull the belt off of the front pulley, and turn by hand.

Don,
If you already have a flat nosed bullet you could load up ten w/o gas checks and see how he likes them. They won’t be as accurate w/o. But, if all he is doing is taking the grandkids out and shooting cans at 20 yards then what does it matter?

Looks like a nice bullet, but if it is really a .309.... it might be a bit on the skinny side, maybe? I would have tried .311- something.

Yeah, I thought about that. However, using a hard alloy, they may come out of the mould a bit bigger.

At large, whereabouts unknown.
SAECO, RCBS and Lyman both made "Cowboy" moulds for 30-30. Lever-action silhouette shooters are required to use non-gascheck designs for competition. I think Lyman discontinued their design, but RCBS & SAECO still list theirs.

uh oh, I used a GC design for lever action silhouette.
I also look back on things and realize the load of 2400 I used was showing position sensitivity and I wasn’t smart enough to realize it. Lots of vertical at 150 and 200.

Will be buying Cherokee's mould, since he no longer uses it. Without a gascheck, I'm thinking loads in the 1300 - 1400fps range. Anybody got any ideas as to load data?
