I know 300 blk-out barrels are normally a real fast twist. I would like to know at what speed a 10 twist will stabilize a 180 grain cast bullet. I'm debating building a blk or a 308 with a new Douglas barrel. I know they are 2 different bolt faces but they will on a savage & I have both bolt heads.

probably down around 900 fps.
YMMV but [shrug] if i wanted slow i'd target about that speed and another 50 fps. as a start point.

I was eating supper & I realized that if I had thought about it the case size would make no difference as long as it is loaded to same velocity. I have already shot a bullet longer than the 180 grn. in a 10 twist 308 with 9 grn. of unique & it shot very well. But it is good to know I can get down to the 950fps range if I want. Any thoughts on getting as good accuracy wit 300blk as with 308 in a premium match barrel. if not I will definitely go with 308 I know how well it can be made to shoot. Only reason I'm even considering the blk is large rifle primers are so hard to find & I have plenty of the small. I was wanting to shoot in the 1500 to 1650fps range.

a good barrel is a good barrel.
my AAC is stupid accurate, it's only fault is it weighs like 2 lbs. and it's easy to move around on the bench.
it will pretty easily give me 1500 or so with a 165 and doesn't use too much powder doing it.

just me but i wouldn't plan on real good ignition in a 308 case with a small primer.
yeah there's ways around it, but it locks you in a box.
sides you can use LP primers for what we are doing. [i trust them up through 40-K and maybe a touch past, but not for the 50-60K stuff]
something like 17-18grs. of 2400 is gonna do just fine with them.

Yes I read the 6mm Creedmore gave inconsistent ignition .The 308 would probably be the same. the gun I'm building has a 8.5lb barrel. the whole gun will weigh about 13lbs with 36 weaver. it is a savage LRPV right bolt left port & barrel is a Douglas XX premium blank. it should shoot.

that should be a sweet rifle no matter which case you put behind the bullet.
I decided to go with the 308. I got to looking at how many rifles & contender barrels I have that take small rifle primers & this is the only one that takes the large primers. I actually have more primers per gun for this one. I hope you understand what I'm trying to say.

Well I'm very disappointed. Did all the machine work today. everything went fine until I turned barrel around in lathe. Cut to length went to cut the crown & saw that the bore was off center. very noticeable when barrel was spinning. I started measuring & best I can tell It's off about .012. startrd to call Douglas today but I was so peed off I probably would have said something bad. What really bothered me the most is they brag a lot about how straight & true they get everything. I will call tomorrow. I'm sure they will say to send it back & let them check it out. I hope this was not a reject someone else sent back. That would explain how a 3 week turn around turned into 3 days. 2 of the days were Saturday & Sunday. Bore was dead center in chamber end. I always check that first thing.

I was going to suggest chambering it to 30-30 Winchester…..but never mind.
It will probably shoot well regardless of the off center bore but I understand not liking it!

If it was just off center I mite have kept it. what really bothered me was when I get a new barrel first thing I check is if bore is in center of barrel on each end. This one checked perfect at length it came '29" after I cut back to 25" ( I checked it again this morning dial indicator ) it was 015 off center at crown. That means the bore is curved. So after cutting just 4" & being that much off can you think what it would be at 14.5". back. I called Douglas this morning & they agreed. They told me to send it back & send them trac.# & they would machine me another & go ahead and send it to me. Pretty good customer service!

That’s great that Douglas is owning it.
I know that you’d have to modify the bolt head and extractor for the 30-30.
Those Savage single shots are neat actions.
