311440 or 311291?

Plain base for either. Just an all around informal plinking bullet for the 30-30, 308, '06....

Looking at four cavity NOE molds. What one would you choose and why? Am I missing a better option?

Lets hear your input.

With your 300 blk being a bolt gun I would choose the 311440, I have one and love it. Once I get to casting I will be working up a load with said bullet for deer this year.

The 311440 has been a great little bullet for me, but so has many of the classics from lyman. Hard to go wrong with any of them for "informal plinking"

When I hear informal plinker and plain base I immediately think of the 311440, 311041, 311291, and the lee 312-155-2r (pb'd of course)

With me I like the 180 gr and under for plinkers as there is no need for the extral lead to poke a hole in paper, but if you want it to double as a deer capable projectile then a heavier bullet would be preferred. So I guess my answer lies totally in your end use.

Thank you.
I took a look at the NOE 30 Hunter and I do like the long taper from the front band to the nose, but before ordering that mould I would make sure it would fit the throats of the guns you intend. That particular bullet at .314 in my Finn M39 would work wonders with the throat they cut in them, so I must say thank you for putting that on the top of my short list.

FWIW the 311440 has feeding and coal issues in my 30-30 Win 94, that huge fat nose doesn't work well in my rifle. YMMV, but the 311291 in my opinion ia a more suitable boolit for the 30-30.

Waco...for the love of me I have not been able to get the 311291 to shoot in my '06's

The 30 hunter is a fine bullet ,but it certainly is not the 315.

Wich by the way should be great in all the cal
s you mentioned.

You should also have both the Lee 312 155 and 312 160 tl. Seriously get a hold of them as soon as you can.

I know Ben swears by his 311041.

Plainbase plinker for ALL of those mentioned? Saeco 315 or clone, hands down!
I was going to suggest this as well. My 2nd choice is the Lee 30-150-TL 6 cav. group buy mold once available "over there." Btw, I couldn't get my #311291 to shoot accurately in any of my .30cal. rifles either. Ditto for -041. However, for reasons I can't understand, -291 shot well from a FN (Sako) M 28/30 I once owned and almost as well in my Swiss K-31's (sized to .309" though.

quicksilver, The undersized nose on -291 worked in the M 28/30, which normally like #314299 (.304" nose dia.), and the K-31's (I had 2 at one time), but in nothing else. My .30-06, for ex., needs a .310 - .311" CB with a nose of .302" or larger for the best accuracy. Needless to say, neither -291 nor -041 even came close. Ironically, one of the most accurate CB's I use in the '06 is cast from a single cav. CBE mould which is a heavier version of -041, with a .304" nose though.

I haven't shot #311041 in enough rifles to give a meaningful estimate of its general worth. It has been EXCELLENT in my 2 30/30 WCFs I've tried it in.

I've been plugging along with #311291 for 30+ years. My consensus estimate is that if the nose fits the land tops snugly, it has shot well. Usually. My current 30-06 and 30/30 dote upon it, a past 30/06 that was .3015" x .309" barrel/.311" throat got #00 Buck-like patterns not far behind my Rem 870's dispersions. In 92/6/2 my aged #311291 casts a nose a few tenths over .300".

I have a NOE 291, nose ..300 to .301 depending on alloy.

The nose is so short I don't know why it should not work.

I opted for a five cavity plain base NOE 30 Hunter mold. Read lots of good things about this mold. Looking forward to casting and loading with it.
