312290 in the .308 Win.

Inspired by some of Ben's recent testing, I decided to load up some NOE 312290's in .308
These were shot from a Rem 700 heavy barrel in a McMillan stock with a Leupold VXIII
3x10x50 from prone with a Harris bipod and a rear bag.
All rounds fired at 100 yards. Nothing really to write home about but at least respectable I suppose.
My battery in the Chrony died so I'm not sure on speed. 1600fps maybe???
Load- Checked and lubed bullet sized to .311" @ 225gr.
Once fired FC brass FL sized, trimmed, chamfered, flash hole deburred, primer pocket squared.
Bullets weighed 225.3-225.9gr
CCI LRP and 18.5gr IMR4198 with .7gr Dacron
A little tweaking of the powder up or down might make the groups shrink up a bit...

Well done!

If it gets any better from there you'll be in spectacular shape.

Sept. 10, 2021 Steve left us. You are missed.
Looks good to me. How is the recoil with that heavyweight?

Excellent ...considering the support you had..
Dacron with 4198..?...interesting...did you try it with out...?

I've used everything from unique to 4064 with that bullet ..wo filler...

Off bags..it's sub minute...my shooting like you did would probably have resulted in the same groups...

BTW if you have any flavor of 299..give it a try in that gun...I think you'll fall in love..

one little test you can try is to take a smear of lanolin between your thumb and forefinger and wipe it on the nose of the bullet.
even a little Vaseline will work.
just the thinnest little wipe up and down the nose.
sometimes that will make groups shrink.
I bet a little more speed wouldn't hurt either.

Off to a good start, no wild flyers that I can see. Is that red dirt sticking to the lube residue around the holes?

I loaded up 20 more rounds today. I changed it up a bit. I'm going to try 20gr of SR4759 this time.

As soon as I get back to shooting I will try some of your loads in my Tikka 308. I have had that rifle for 6 weeks and have not shot it

I'd try 29 and see.[/QUOTe

Well...that kept me from having to say it....

30 grs of 4064 in the 30-06 with the 284 or 290 is good for me ...so I would expect to work up from 27.5-28 grs in the .308 with 4895..

Okay. A 200gr bullet was the heaviest I have in either of my Lyman manuals so I was taking a stab at a 225gr bullet.
I have not loaded any yet. I got the bullets sorted, sized, and lubed. I'm still doing some brass prep.
I try 28 or 29gr and see what happens. Thanks for the advice.
