357 Rem. Max Rifle

I wish that Henry would consider making their break open single shot rifle in 357 Rem. Max .
You could do a lot of tricks with that round in that particular rifle.

Indeed Ben. I would buy a Max rifle. Got to get that big boy 45C that Ian got me all worked up over.

A levergun in the Max would be cool also. I'd at least go for the s.s. rifle.

Shucks fellers... If enough of us write Henry they will make it ! Consider the 41 Mag ! That happened due to enough interest from shooters.

The Marlin 336 is another simple customer to change calibers in. Just start with a bolt with the same "close"head diameter and rebarrel. There is all sorts of internet conversion info on how to.
In our storage sits a 414 Supermag on a Marlin 336. Total cost was $525.

Henry may be concerned ( and maybe rightfully so ) with the 357 Max. and reloaders pushing the limits of the cartridge.

With the 357 Max, I think I'd want the model above with the recoil pad.
Heavy bullets in the Max would generate quite a bit of recoil in a light single shot.

Mike Bellm talks a lot about 357 max pressure in a single shot. I agree with his thinking in that a 357 max case is the same diameter as a 223 round.

So you should be fine to 55,000 psi. SAAMI max pressure for the 357 max is 40,000 psi. I'm going to assume this is due to revolver clambering.

Most powder manufactures have taken note and listed loads for encore 357 maximums which allow a long cartridge OAL.

I do have to agree it would be great if Henry would chamber the single shot in 357 max. (Especially if they cut the throat correctly).

The 357 max is probably my favorite cartridge. No lubing cases, doesn't use a lot of powder, rivals the 35 rem in ballistics, and for some odd reason doesn't have hardly any recoil.

Lack of recoil in my Ruger SRM is what amazed me. Very pleasant to shoot. I would think in a rifle it would be easy going.

I would be happier with a Henry single shot in 357 Mag and here is why. Most 357's be it Max or Mag have a funky throat for a rifle. I would prefer a "short chambered Max" aka 357 Mag. Because 20 minutes with a 357 Max reamer that has a "normal" throat will clean up any SAMMI issues. If we get a Max to start with... we cope with what we got.

They could probably be talked into the 357 Mag. much easier than they could the Max.

It seems silly to me to engineer a break-action rifle platform from scratch and only offer one rimmed caliber (.44Mag IIRC). Surely they would be open to at least a .357 Magnum version, of course that's easy to say when they'd have to source an entirely new line of barrels and extractors for .35 caliber rimmed. What I was hoping Henry would try to do was fill the niche that H&R has left open: An economy-grade, switch-barrel, break-action with a barrel exchange program and about 20 calibers offered, but this does not seem to be the case so far.

I want to see them re-produce the Colt Lighting in .38 Special, .44 Special, and .45 Colt, but I don't think they'd be able to do it at a price point that would be affordable enough to generate the sales required to net a profit in the end. Henry's own designs are streamlined for production and economy, hence the relatively low price points.

If they make it in .357 Mag,it would be pretty easy to run a reamer into the
chamber and have a .357 Max.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
Do you guys like the handling of the Henry lever gun? TO me they feel clumsy, bulky and way heavier than needed. A Win 92 clone or Mrlin 94 clone in 357 would be a darn near perfect "truck/tractor gun" IMO. I had to settle for a 44 Mag Puma since I've never seen a 357 in the flesh.

A 357 max wouldn't really appeal to me. A 357 mag does all I need and the brass is easy to find.
Bret, I looked for a few years before I found a Marlin 357. Once I saw it I bought it. Never can tell when another will crop up.

I have a 41 mag Henry. Using 265 - 290 grainers with a case full of 296 or 1680 that "heft and bulk" and that nice absorbing butt pad is appreciated. When I get up north again that 41 Henry lever flipper may well become a 41 "longer case" depending on the amount of "modification" that can be safely accomplished.
In a 357 mag the Henry would be silly. I have a 357 Rossi that with 200 grainers is no real issue. Even the Marlin CCL 41 mag is no issue with heavy cast.

Starline makes 357 Max brass now. The 360 DW has been about for a couple years and worked well with long seated bullets in my 357 max barrels.
