45-70 range results

image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg Marlin 1895 45-70 is my rifle. I had a nice recoil pad installed and a trigger job done recently. It also just got a Redfield 2x7 scope. The bullet is an Accurate 460-405V sized to .460" and lubed with 2500 and rolled in BLL. Alloy is ACWW. WW brass CCI large rifle primer and SR4750 and IMR3031 were the powders.
42gr 3031 and 29gr SR4759
The 3031 seemed to have the edge. I'll try and tweak the 4759 load only because I have so much of it.
Al in all I was very happy with the results. Next time out when I fine tune the scope, I'll shoot at 100. These were shot at 50. 37 degrees zero wind. Sunny. Perfect day on the hill with my brother!
Walter.

Good loads in my 1895 will do under 2 inches for 5 at 100 pretty much all day long.
I bet those group very well at 100.

Well done Waco

I had a Limbsaver on mine for a bit. It does take a bunch of the bite out of the rifle. Problem was that it added almost an inch of pull makng it a bit long for me. The Limbsaver is also very prone to damage from solvent. Learned that the hard way.

Maybe I should get a better pad and send the buttstock to Ben for installation.

I don't know of any that work as well as let alone better than the sims. Thanks for the heads up on the solvent though. Mine get beat up from hunting use but, they plain work.
I'll admit I Bubba cut a single shot 12 and sanded a sims down to fit just to tolerate light loads through it.

Fine gun, and you have some fine loads there. They will suit any purpose
which you will put them to, other than long range sniping! :)

My Marlin GG will shoot 1.5-2" groups at 100 with my RCBS cast 405 GC or
Rem 405 jacketed with my hunting load of 57 gr of W748. No typo, and
Brian Pearce reports that this load is in the Trapdoor Springfield pressure
range, although making 1750 over the chrono from my short GG barrel.
Nothing special done to accurize the rifle, just put a 1-4 Leo scope on
it and go.

I pushed up to over 2100 fps safely, at least for the gun, not so much for
my shoulder! Finally decided that there is not likely anything on this planet
that a 405 gr .458 diam bullet at 1750 fps won't kill, although I have
reserved some Cor-Bon 405 Penetrator solids for possible use on Cape
Buffalo, should that ever come to pass. Verified the effectiveness of
the 405 Rem jacketed load on zebra and wildebeest, one shot kills there
with impressive penetration.

I did it with the 405 Remington jacketed. It does get your attention.
First lever action sillouhette match I fired was when I only had my Marlin 1895. I used the ammo I had on hand, 425 RD over 45-48 gr of 4895 if I recall correctly. Call it a 425 gr bullet at around 1750 fps.
Between some practice shots and a 40 round match I shot almost 60 of them in an afternoon. I was sore as hell the next day. The chickens sure go down fast.....

Brad,
That is my hunting load, but +20 grains. DEFINITELY will kill any chicken, steel or otherwise! Kills a 600 lb
wildebeest real well, too. :) I am glad you "used enough gun" for those silhouettes. I'll bet
that the rams went done pretty convincingly, too.

Yes, 2100 with a 405 is way out into NO FUN territory. One 5 shot group was entirely convincing that
the gun could take more than I could. That is nibbling at 450 nitro express territory, which is a 480 gr
at 2150, and was a good choice for rhino, elephant and lion, etc. Bet they never made one that
weighed less than 8 lbs!

Good looking groups Waco. You are going to end up causing me to buy that 460-405V mold. I have looked at it several times.

I just picked up a marlin GBL and topped it with a redfield 2-7-33 but haven't made it out to shoot yet.
