Know where there is a cut down Trapdoor 50-70 (w/o a front sight) that I can get on the cheap. I need to just get it and get it set up!

And should you decide you do not like it I know an old treadhead who will happily help you out of it.

I have an 1866 Allin second conversion, in 50-70. No ammo, and only 4 pieces of questionable brass, so I've not shot it in the 4 years that I've had it. One of these days...

A good friend had a Stevens 44-1/2 shot out 32-40 rebored by JES to 35-30-30.
40yds with a rcbs 200 grn tang sights.
Let’s make it 9 rifles.
Nice shooting! I've always wanted to have something rebored to 35-30-30.

I had JES rebore a 45-70 Handi to 50-70.
Shot it today.
4x Burris mini.
465 LBT LFN
50 yds
Kicks good at only 6-3/4 lbs
Very nice looking gun, and wow at those holes. Not just the placement, but the size. That's wicked cool, thanks for sharing.

Someday I'll manage to find an 1866 trapdoor and some 50-70 brass at the same time. . . . Til then I'll still be plinking with my 1879 infantry rifle. But brass or no, I'd be doing my best to acquire that cut-down rifle, Oscarflytyer. Brass in shootable quantities can be found, or made, unless your idea of "shootable quantities" involves (as mine does) matches where you need a couple hundred rounds.

A year or two ago, I bought a target rifle built on a military Martini action chambered in 7-30 Waters which I think is going to becoome a .38-55 at some point. Good to know JES does such good work.

NEF made those in .500 S&W, I was always intrigued by the idea, but I bet recoil is fierce.

JES Reboring does excellent work. His turn around time can be as fast as three weeks. One month is average for his rebores on our rifles. Probably during hunting season it may be some slower.
He has rebored calibers / chambered .38 to .512 and all shoot as well as any rifle we own.
We are next going to send a 43 Spanish to get redone to 50-90.

A 50-90 is a fine 100 yd hunter. Any critter is going to get the hurt added to walking about.
Jes may only have a 50-70 reamer so we will start there. But I know where there is a 50-90 reamer sleeping peacefully.

Recoil would be a lot easier with a softer pad than the factory one on it.

I had a sweatshirt and flannel shirt on.
Not the best at taming recoil.

JES put a 1in 22” twist and I told him to use the 3 groove rifling he advertises.
The lands look real wide.
I used 28 grains of 5744 powder.
It doesn’t burn real clean but seems to shoot well.

Here is my Model 1866 Second Allin Conversion. I found the barreled @ction only among Pop’s things after he passed. Restoring it with original parts would have cost a pile of one hundred dollar bills, that I did not have. So, when the replica Mississippi rifle with a crap barrel showed up…

Hey Kevin that looks fine to my old eyes. Who can write it was never done before....
Plus it is back to shooting which far outshines waiting for those affordable replacements to turn up.

Really think about why you want a 50/90 rather than a 50/70. The 450 grain 50/70 bullet with black powder will shoot side to side through a buffalo. Plus you can use smokeless to get another 200 f/s if you think you need it.
