63 degrees today, wind calm, blue sky.
Just had to get outside and shoot some.
I took my friend Nick with me to the range.
We shot cast bullets from our Swede rifles at 50 yards.
I've found me a nice load. 10.3 grs. of Alliant Unique with just about any weight cast bullet you want to seat in the case.

All groups you see below were fired out of my Swede 96 Sporter with 18 X scope.
Here is a photo of my rifle that I used to shoot the groups below :

To have never participated in a major war, they were certainly ready if the need arose.
These are FINE old rifles.

Ben that unique load is about what I did with mine. Maybe a tad more. None the less they are very pleasing to work with.

I had a lot of people tell me, " Don't even think about shooting cast bullets in a 6.5X55 mm rifle.

You'll be wasting your time."

If my afternoon was wasted, I can really say that I had a good time.

Ben,
It seems you can't make any Unique load shoot poorly!
You could be a Poster Child for the Alliant Powder Company! :D

I really like that reddish stain on the stock. Nice figure in the wood too it looks like.
Very accurate to boot.

"Yes, sir--those cast bullets will melt in the barrel half-way to the muzzle." Suet heads........

Large pistol primers, eh? Sure as heck no ignition problem apparent. NICE groups.

I will commence with cast rifle loading tomorrow on the new bench. I did a 150 round J-word warm-up today after a 20 month lay-off, and I was RUSTY.

Paul,

Awww, those old Swedes won't shoot. " You'd just be wasting your time."
You know, the twist is all wrong, you can't get a bullet to fit.
Too many problems, just send them all to me and I'll help you get out from under
that problem.

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

I'd be proud of either rifle, really nice. New here and just love topics like these, thanks. I always thought they were the perfect all around rifle, target, deer, varmint, and just for fun! I missed buying a swede that was full stocked with a shortened barrel, now i see it every time i look at one.

Both of mine are as issue, excellent bores, and will stay that way. I did put a little 2x on one of them, but it only involves removing the rear sight, and reverts back to original with replacement of the issue rear sight. Mine are no youngsters, being made in 1906 and 1909, and exhibit excellent quality workmanship and pride taken by the makers over 100 years back. I have a desire to own a modern 6.5x55, but just cant seem to be able to justify one, and don't have time to shoot all that I have now. Am going to have to shoot off a bunch of jacketed stuff in order to have some empties to load (one of these days)
