Yeah Hornady Interlock bullets work just fine if you stay in reasonable velocities.

very nice rifle!!! he will love it!!!

i killed alot of deer with that 7x57. i gave the semi custom '98 Mauser with a 20" Douglas Premium to my son about ten years or so ago. he kept on killing deer with the 7 Mauser. i've got the sporterized(s) 1908 Brazilian and 24/30 Venezuelan Mausers. the 08 model has to go to my gunsmith to rethreaded (D&T) its scope mounts. 2 of 3 screws (scope mount) aren't tight, instead they are stripped.

i bought 700-800 of 2nd 7mm 150gr SP bullets from Midway (they were on sale, $13 and some odd cents/100). i've got around 2 or 3 lbs of the discontinued IMR4320. i might as well shoot it. i have 145gr Saeco FN GC too.

i used to like 139gr Hornady FN but they are discontinued too. i have a box or 2 of 140gr Hornady SST, but i haven't loaded them. the SST and BT should only be going 2800fps (thats good enuff for all calibers), anymore than that, it is like a grenade. i luv mushroom bullets, so i will only go 2800fps or less.

my youngest son has a semi-custom '16 Spanish Mauser in 6.5x55 (Numrich barrel) with 120gr Nosler BT and i believe IMR4350? that goes around 2700fps+. i had him shooting it for the 1st time and he shot (bench) 14 or 15 times at a target at 100 yards that went around 1 1/2".

I have a 1916 Oviedo action with a repurposed Remington 7mm Mag barrel chambered in 7x57 Mauser. I still need to fit the semi inletted classic stock to it.
It should make a very nice deer rifle- love that cartridge!
I hunted exclusively with 8x57 for years so I have nothing bad to say about Mauser cartridges. Yes I know that the 8mm didn’t start out as a Mauser cartridge- but in 1905 it became one…..
Currently I have a 6.5x55, 7.65x53, 7x57, and 8x57 Mauser rifles- they will work!

Yeah Todd little over kill on those white tails using a Howitzer.
Oh I forgot to add the standard “LOL”
John,
I shot two whitetails, a buck and a doe, on the same trip (a couple of days apart) with my .358 Norma and factory loaded Norma 250gr. Oryx bullet.
The buck was shot at @ 260 yards. It literally folded all 4 legs up, and dropped to the ground without a twitch. Through the ribs, so almost no meat loss.
The doe was shot at about 35 yards, feeding with her head down and facing me. I thought I would be tricky and shoot her through the neck when she had her head down. She raised her head just as the shot broke, and the bullet followed her spine all the way to her tail... That back strap painted the trees for quite a distance around her.
As to why I used that rifle - my 30-06 had gotten boring, and like the mountain climbers say "It was there!"

(...and no, I won't be doing that again!!)

i've killed 3 or 4 deer with the 9.3x57. its furthest shot was about 50 yards, but 30-40 yards is more likely. i still haven't used my chronograph but the 275gr WFN GC over IMR4895 is probably going 1800fps+/-. i shoot behind the shoulder and in every" case there is a .368" hole going in and there is .400"+ hole going out. the back of the lungs is a mishmash, but the rib meat is an "eat up to the hole" meat. the deer go straight down after the boolit hits. one day, the deer will run or jog, but only about 30ish yards and then fall over.

i like the x57 rifles. they are a mild mannered killer of game.

Todd I have to agree with you about the 57’s. I’ve been wanting a Swede and a 7x57 for a long time, but only in a Winchester Featherweight. That’s just me. The modern Featherweights are my favorite bolt guns. I won’t be able to afford multiples so I’m waiting for the money and the opportunity to coincide, which hasn’t happened yet. Those are two fine cartridges for sure.
But as far as the 8x57 goes I have 358 Win, 338 06, and the 35 Whelen. So enough said.

Ben, warn your grandson about laying that camo gun on the ground- it may disappear! I like the hand painted leaves.
CW- that “watermelon “ bullet is cool looking.
Todd- I had a CZ 9.3x62mm and if we had bigger game in N Texas I’d probably still have it.
I surprised a doe at fifty yards with it and a 270 gr Speer- she dropped right there.

I think that I want to try some " Heavies " in my grandson's 7X57.
I have about 4 or 5 moulds that cast 160 grs. or heavier.
I think I'll start with this one.

The NOE 7mm 184 gr. gas checked bullet.
