8x57 sight in

Being as it was 70+ degrees outside, I took my 1944 98 Mauser with aperture sights and a 170gr Speer semi SP and IMR 4350 and that's with '06 reformed to 8x57. I never shot before and I was only shooting at 50 yards. I took 7 shots to get the aperture set right on the target (lead sled). Then I did a 13 shot group at 50 yards. It is around 1 1/4 - 1 1/2" group (sandbags).

I was surprised at the load, it is a grain below maximum. It should be around 2500-2600fps, I check on the Speer load book. Someone was too lazy to set up the chronograph and to take the target down. On a positive note, the twilight aperture is better than the old aperture.

I bought three of them and now I will buy three more. The group size will be enuff to take deer out at abound 60ish y,ards and under. Anything that's over 3 or 4" group at 100 yards, then I will change the powder load. Oh, I forgot. The group was made by doing 5 shots, then let Ietting the barrel cool, 5 shots, barrel cool and then 3 shots. Probably Wed or Friday, then the 7.65 Argie (91 Mauser) will be sighted in. You gotta love them aperture sights.

I like that rifle and I’m a lifelong fan of the 8x57 cartridge, too. I’ve never needed(but occasionally Wanted) anything bigger……
Even that barleycorn Mauser front sight is useable with the aperture rear sight- for me.

I bought it and took it apart And I found lack mold on the inside of the stock. I then restocked it. The aperture sight was was a Lyman base and a Redfield receiver So I found a Lyman receiver. Lyman and Redfield have 2 different sight elevation screws. The diameter is different.

I am a fan of the 8mm. I had a custom 8mm built on a Turk SR 98. It had a truck sized axle for a barrel. It was one of the heaviest guns I have had. But it would shoot the Sierra 200gr hpbt bullets into a 0.20" group at 100yds and would hold a 0.25" at 200yds. One day I will do another.

I have several 8mm molds. I like my Accurate 33-205T gas check for a hunting bullet. Flat point that hits hard and enough taper to feed reliably thru the Mauser magazine.

The 8mm has and will always have a special place for me.
My first deer hunts "on my own" as a young man were with my Grand fathers 1898 Mauser sporterised in the '50's.
My first rifle deer fell to this cartritage with 175g Sierra's. Back then it was only peep sited!
I was gifted that rifle and I was still young and stupidly... modified it more. The muzzle was a bit funky so it was pruned 1" or so and then D&T for a scope. Then re stocked from the Bishop grampa installed.

Yes, I still have the rifle. Short time ago I re stocked it in a vintage Fajen walnut stock bring it back closer the feel of gramps rifle. I don't have the peep but could buy. I do have the banded Lyman front site that could be modified. I even mounted a scope from grandpas things he left me but that ol' bushnell scope was faulty and altho I sent it back... I got new junk not the classic repaired. So, I have a "Newer" Redfield 3-9 steel scope before they went defunked few years back.

I also did a bit of a deep dive when I did the stock. (Had ta hand fit it) used a few bullets and powders and never really found what I wanted. At the time I couldnt get 4064 that was always my go to powder. Now today I have a few pounds of it as well as a good selection of excellent bullets. So need to revisit this.

I bought the Remington 700 Classic in 8x57 years ago. It shoots very skinny, but quite tall groups. It's going to be one of the first things I work on when shooting becomes a higher priority for me closer to retirement.

I was really surprised with the load, IMR 4350. It filled the case up to its neck. I am looking for a mold, but I have bought 200-300 pieces of 170gr semi SP Speers so that will be good until I get the mold.

The only thing bad about is the neck turning, I have to neck turn almost all of my '06 cases. I have turn them for the 9.3x57 too. But they are good for 7x57. And yes, I have a lot of '06 cases!!!

I just checked, they are Remington cases. I guess the rifle has a tight throat. No matter, I have already turned them, so it will be alright. I think I have 100 or 150 cases. I have plenty enuff for my lifetime.

i got one too.
mine shoots about 1-1/2" with everything i've put in it.
i've thought about bedding it and relieving the barrel channel, but it's been consistently consistent.

Those old sported Mausers have a charm all their own. I have a couple, haven't had them out in a while though. Back when I started casting it was 30-40 Krag and 8X57. Good times with old iron. Nice looking rifle Todd.

It is a Richards micro stock. Its a Grade 2 American black walnut. I had to finished it and do some woodwork. My son now has an Apache Gold Wolverine stock on his 16 Spanish Mauser in 6.5 Swede. I love the Krag!!! It was my first cast boolits deer. 173gr Ranch Dog (.311") and H4891 going 1926fps. It was taken at 93 yards with one shot. She fell straight down. My oldest son has our long range with cast boolits at 173 yards using the same rifle and load. She fell straight down too. Oh, I almost forgot. The Krag is the first time I shot and could hear the boolit hit. BO..THWAP..OM!!!! All the Mauser I own, 91 - 98 Mauser,I think that the 96 small ring Mauser is the best. Mine is a Husqvarna m46 in 9.3x57.

The rifle came with an original stock, but when I took the action off it was black mold and cracked and rotted on the inside.

I took my 8x57 out today and I still am at 50 yards. I have done sereval loads with fully formed 8x57 cases made from the '06. they are still the 170gr Speer semi SP and Reloder 7 going about 2500fps, lazy forgot to bring the chronograph even tho it was just upstairs!!!

5 shot group at 50 yards
1 1/4"
1 1/2"
3/4"
1 1/4"
1 3/4"

I measure them by my thumb. So it is either a + or -. I guess that is 1 1/2" average group at 50 yards. That's good enuff for deer under 60 yards. I have to take 8mm to the shop to get 100 yards. But 3" or so is good enuff for deer.

I think I am starting to like this 8x57. It shoots great!!!

5 shot groups at 100 yards using a sandbag
170gr Speer Semi SP and IMR4350

1 3/4" group
1 1/2" group
2" group
1 3/4" group
1 3/4" group
and finally.......
3/4" group

This is measured by my thumb.

I almost want to put scope base and scope on the 8mm. I was amazed at the 3/4" 5 shot group, especially with aperture .093" sight. I guess the Shooting gods smiled upon me or it was just lucky!!!
