'91 Argentine Mauser

"OK, OK, I'm going as fast as I don't want to go!"
Well, I just couldn't help myself!

My local gun store got in an 1891 Argentine Mauser with all matching numbers. The crest was scrubbed as many were that were exported during that first release by their government but it looks like there never was a crest so it was scrubbed cleanly. Everything else about the rifle is almost perfect . . . Especially the price of $295.

I just couldn't resist as I also have a near mint model '09 Carbine that I load for.

My safe is getting full!

Wonderful rifle and cartridge! Some good shooting can be done if you can work with the issue sights. I actually find the inverted "V" on mine to be pretty easy to hit with. IIRC my starting load with cast was 13.0 Red Dot, later 16.0 2400. Nothing crazy, and the bullet, which I think was "The Fat 30" GB 6 banger has worked good in all the 311's I've tried it in. In hunting loads the 7.65x53 gives up nothing to the 308 IMO. I have an '09 Argentine Mauser too that I need to turn into a tractor gun. It's been beat and would make a good rainy day rifle. The '91, to me, carries like a Pa. style muzzle loader. Balance point just ahead of the mag IIRC. Nice rifles.

I like those myself (and most Mausers) I have never owned one! I have a 1889 which is the 1809's shrouded barrel predecessor. I have a number of 1909 Mausers most converted to custom rifles. One sporterized and left as a cast bullet rifle.

I have a friend in Michigan who loves these and has almost all variants he picked up a cherry Engineers carbine last year locally. He even competes with them in local military rifle matches.

I was prepping some '06 converted brass last night!

Good luck with yours!

I’m in, too!
Recently I traded into my very first 1891 DWM Argentine sporter. Mine also has the crest very neatly removed.IMG_1674.jpeg
I’ve always been a 98 guy, but two 93s have been swaying me towards small ring actions the past few years…
The 1891 is a push feed Mauser! That just don’t sound right…..,
I have found that 8x57 and 30-06 brass is easy to form for the 7.65 x53(Mausers FIRST smokeless rimless cartridge).
I’m going to try to improve the 7# trigger pull later today.

There absolutely nothing wrong with '93's and '95's either! I have a '93 in a sporter stock (remember Bishop stocks?) that will group 160's into boring 2" circles all day long if I do my part. Those are NORMA factory loads from the late 50's. I'm about out now, down to maybe 12-16 rounds. Gonna have to do some handloading soon. Anywaym the point is that old ratty rifle is just a solid work gun. Nothing wrong with the earlier Mausers as long as you don't try to launch an intercontinental ballistic missile out of it. A very, very under appreciated action in my opinion.

We had four 93 Mausers the Israel's made into 7.62 x 51. Gave away 3 but still have that one. Fine shooting "carbine" and has held up nicely to hundreds (well over 1K) of our cast loads with the RCBS 180 FNGC moving along at 2000+FPS.
Plus well over an ammo box of 7.62 x 51 Nato. No idea how many rounds the IDF put through it but there is no issues with it.
No matching bolts with these Mausers. But for under $40 I sure will not complain.

The 93 and 95 Mausers suffered the same problem as the 38 Special and 44 Special revolvers did when the magnums arrived. Suddenly, everyone thought the older versions were somehow inadequate. While the large ring 98 Mauser is an excellent rifle, the older models were fine.
I agree, the 93 & 95 Mausers were, and continue to be, good rifles within thier design limits.

Have a couple 1891 Argentine Mausers. One is a sporter Ben helped me get some years back. that one has seen more just a few Jacketed bullets down the tube. Second is a carbine without the sling ring behind the magazine. I say without as the space has been filled with wood but the hole in the forend hasn't been plugged. All matching numbers and the barrel cleaned up nicely. Still too darned hot here in Louisiana to go shooting. Still have some 314299's cast up and need to slug the barrel on the carbine. Can anyone suggest a load using the 314299?. I have Unique, 2400, IMR 4227 and some IMR 4759 if I remember right. Thanks, Frank

I just tried some 200 gr Lees in my 7.65 Argentine with 10 grs of Unique. Accurate and a pleasure to shoot. Next batch I will use Large Rifle primers instead of Large Pistol primers because two of this batch got pierced by the firing pin.
Good old 123 year old mainspring still got some P&V!
