A different skill set

Chess club president for two years in high school and played a lot in college. Did the chess-by-mail thing a few times too. My chess partner moved to Australia about 20 years ago, haven't played since. He and I got bored playing regular chess so we started playing two-move chess where each player gets to move either two pieces or one piece twice per turn. After we mastered that we invented a new game based on a 10x10 board and added a piece called a Squire inside of the Bishop. The Squire moved like a Queen but only two squares in any direction. That game could be played one move per turn but we almost always played two-move. I'm too dumb to even try anymore. How does the horsey move again?

I play chess poorly. Played in one tournament when I was a in elementary school. I can beat my kid. But not my dad.

I also play this game poorly, but it intrigues me. Go.

Like Ian, I played in High School, but was only average on the team. Play some in the Fire House on slow nights, but got beaten by the college chess players. I have not played in 40 years.

Played in High School, also on board when off watch. Not even sure if I still have a board.

Use to play when I was young. Like the game well enough, hard to find friends that were competitive. Area high schools had nothing structured. Owned a wooden set, with matching checkers. Don't know what became of it.

Chinese Checkers is about as stirring as I care to navigate these days. Wonder how many millions of Chess pieces are in Land Fills?

my Brother played Chess in High school, he was very good. He is 8 years older than me. So that means I played when I was "almost" in high school. I've played a few other people on rare occasion over the years, but I am not very good. I never learned the classic "moves" or the counter-moves.

I've spent much more time playing strategic card games, like Bridge and/or others. During College, I was in a group of 4 that played "Hearts" so much, that we were able to call the hand after 2 or 3 or 4 plays. As I look back, I wish we would have switched to Bridge at some point...that would have been great fun with that group. These days, I play Sheephead, sometimes called Sheepshead (formerly known as Schafkopf in the old country). The big difference to Sheephead, compared to other trick playing games, is they change the hierarchy order, and that takes a long time for it to become second nature, especially when playing during a social event when people are talking and telling stories...I tend to be one that talks alot and is easily distracted, LOL...So I make lots of mistakes with the group I play with, as they have been playing this all their lives, where I've only really only been playing it 3 times a year or so, for the last decade.

I played a little contract bridge with the physics club guys in college, I definitely see the appeal.

I can play chess and know just enough to be able to lose quickly.

On a good day I can even think ahead a few moves but I've never been able to muster the mental capacity to anticipate my moves and my opponents moves.

I'm a former Chess addict. I ran out of new people to play many years back and pretty much quit cold turkey. I taught my younger son how to play when he was in High School and he also played hard for a few years, then gave it up as well.

When I was young Chess was our go to game with my gang! Not sure how my memory would serve me now!
I do like all those pretty pieces:headscratch:

My wife and I enjoy playing, we just aren’t very good. Pretty new to the game.

Not a big game player either, but I do play chess and checkers. Am I any good? Meh. Do I enjoy it? A LOT! I am thankful to be easily entertained, and lack the requirement that I be really good at something in order to enjoy doing it.
