Parkerizing by itself is no protection against rust, but it holds oil and grease very well,
and oiled park is very rust resistant.

Sad to see a good 77 going this way.......

I was heavy into historic preservation work, back before it became "fashionable".So,from under an 1836 house we did comes this can of Texaco rust proofing...not quite cosmolene, not "quite" like anything? We use in now on old wood and metal working equipment. It's definitely pre war (II).

Once a,handle..knurled knob...anything that needs to stay,"in the white"...gets polished, buffed,it's coated with the "stuff".Have had this G container for 20+ years....might have used a cups worth?

Put it this way,you could put it on a tablesaw top, following directions...and then throw it out behind the shop and lay bets down on when any rust shows.

Which is the acid test...want to test a wood film?Shoot a test pce,and chuck it out the door. This is what we did when auto BC/CC systems of urethane got traction,15 or so years ago. It's pretty good.

But,there is this stigma, usually from wood working, but we see it in gun and to a lesser extent in bow world that....either,epoxy or auto clears "have" to be shiny? And epoxy "has" to be thick?

Uhh,we ain't pouring this stuff on.Heck,we can spray a base of epoxy that is so thin, you can put tru-oil over it.Gets a bit complicated with the oils....but the point is,unless we "told" you what it was....you probably won't know.

I personally like the matte/flat sheen with the little, either bugchit bumps...or the spider web clear finish.

So,probably going to get one of my boys to get me an atv scabbord, which has some real bennys from a logging perspective.

Weld up a mount system that ,just like the implementation,it uses equipment click pins to hold it on.Nice weather, mowing and such, the 77 don't need the scabbord.

Thanks for the brain jogs! That was WAY faster, and better no doubt, than me thinking about it for a month.

atv scabbord

Seen one of these on Craigslist for less than 1/3 new price awhile back, thought about buying it on spec. Then I decided I'd make one from leather if I needed it.

Rifle like that's guna get abused anyhoo.

Reminds me of a farmer I helped on a county road. Couldn't get his lug nuts off, he was using a shotgun bbl as a breaker bar on a 3/8 ratchet.

Got it home.Mounted a 6x44 Tasco, which has always been a shop "mule" to get new rigs,up N running. Will say the fit is good in the Ruger "medium" rings that came with it....P.O.,had a 2-7 Leupold on it.The 44 mm objective on the Tasco is right down on the brrl with a 1/8" clearance, just right.

Got some Hornady 150 RN,which are a 30/30 "designed" bullet...already loaded up.They've been developed for a first year issue 740 Remington 06,which was another rifle gotten because of owed money. It was 100$....and the guy was happy to see it gone.

If you look at the history behind the 740,742,7400....early on,they got the rep as a "jamamatic".The feed ramp would catch any exposed tip on a Spitzer, tying up the action.Which is what happened to it's P.O.And why I went with the RN.Further,to keep from beating up the 740,they get loaded more twds the bullets 30/30 velocity window.

So,short brrl 77 enters the fray.Same load,FL resizing because of 740 semi auto chamber....it'll interchange with the 77.The 740,while being in 80-85% NRA,almost VG condition....accuracy never was much.Minute of coke can @100,at best.Again, right about what we can expect from a bone stock 77.

Am gonna get a plastic scabbard. But it's not going to be a CB pkg.It is the old style tang safety...1989?My searching has it maybe a cpl years older on the serial #....86?

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
Ruger's M77's are,"working man's rifles"?

Minty '89 New Holland 4wd tractor.Logging is the order of the day.Takes 3 1/2 cords of hdwd to heat our house per season. As such, now is the time.Hunting season is for the young'uns.I'm cold,we need heat.

Guy owes me money,I take as partial payment a,MINT..'89(YUP),M77,ultra lite 06(20" brrl,yuck)..less than 100 rds, confirmed.

Is it,morally wrong to bolt this,as new, rifle to my tractor?Subjecting it to the working environment that "logging" entails?

The duty is,killing stuff...be it CB's or JB's.Thanks for your consideration.BW.

Edit;it's gonna get wet,nasty,...and loooong rides around, way too much property/woods.2-7 Loopy or equivalent

FWIW, I generally gather wood all winter long and my tool of choice is either a not so minty JD420 crawler or a beat up Ford 800 tractor. Should be using the horses but that involves some fancy foot work I can't seem to do right now. Anyway, The Ford has a ho'made rack on the right side that has held everything from a beat up 22 pump to a pretty nice Marlin 35Rem. Mostly it carries an FR8 Mauser, a 6.5 Roberts Arisaka or a Savage 22/410. The crawler is tougher as far as room, so I tend to go with a handgun there.

The rack on the Ford is just a J hook made from conduit and an front bracket that's essentially a hunka 3/4 plywood with a piece of old baler belting with a 3" hole in it at right angles to the tractor. Both are screwed to the side panel of the hood. Not fancy, but effective and the tractor is a heap anyway.

Never had any issues with rust on the FR8, or any others really. I don't leave them out there on the tractor, but some drying off with a paper towel and general care taking seemed to work.
Works for me.

I hear ya on the horses.....a bud is neck deep in draft horse....world,haha.

Bore sighted the trashco, got a smallish 5x10 inch camo bag, filled with air soft bb's.Gonna confirm zero on 77 across the hood of the tractor with only the above bag, whilst the engine is running, yepper.

Going to cut FW today, once the kids get out of the woods. So will throw the 77 in a padded cheapy case and bunjy it on the roll bar.....We're definitely gonna test this whole working man's rifle concept.

Not gonna bed it,not free floating, might not even clear the stock? I will scrub the brrl to get to a "starting point" wrt,how many shots before it coppers up?Am 100% spoiled rotten shooting CB loads....never having to "scrub" bores, heck,it's rare they even get patched...doh.

I don't clean my copper shooters until they lose accuracy.
I don't care if I see copper in the end of the barrel or in a chatter mark, if it's shooting straight it stays dirty.
some go 50, some like my stag 6-H have gone over 500 rounds.
the average is probably 250 rounds between cleanings.
then it's usually some foaming bore cleaner with about an hour to soak and a patch or two a brush and another patch and maybe repeat, then an oil covered patch down the bore.

Brrl was spotless, fed the 150 RN like greesed ball bearings,ha.

5th shot hit the head of the 16p sinker that was drove dead center of paper, which was p.o.a.....nailed on a stump.Only took a few clicks up,and over.

2600fps (book number).So,maybe 2500?out of this,still can't believe I got a,20" brrl?

Guessing, because know this scopes tracking history,...going to say, bone stock with this load it'll keep shots in the bttm of a coke can@100.

Edit to add;trigger is a "mushy" 3 1/2#,just about perfect for a greasy gloved finger.
