At a loss

Saw a post over on the other cast site about making belted 30-06.
Why would anyone need to make belted 30-06?
Had never heard of it and it struck me as a waste of time effort and money.
What would you gain by doing it?

gain? nothing.
really,,, nothing.
all the time and effort of adding a belt to a case just so you could go through the effort of head spacing off the shoulder again.
really? ...........come on.

you'd be better off putting Weatherby's double radiused shoulders on the case and blowing out the taper.
at least they would still feed from the magazine.

Hmmm. Strange. Perhaps someone thinks that the belt (we are talking about the belted magnum
case type, right?) is somehow better than without. Since I have never owned a rifle with a belted
magnum cartridge, I have no direct experience. Reports are that he belts are troublesome rather
than helpful, but not certain.

Belt on the case or belt on the bullet, or a feed belt for a machine gun?

A belt on a cast bullet like those steel belts on some new fangled jacketed pistol bullets?
Black Belt Golden Saber?

Some used to put copper rings into bullet molds to cast driving bands on..."belts"?

Teats on a boar hog unless an original Holland & Holland or virtual straightwall big-bore descendant.

Here is a thread from a norwegian forum, were a guy made tools to put a rim on .308 cases, to make .356win. .356 win cases can sometimes be hard to find over here. While the text will be incomprehensible to you, the photos are quite illustrative.

Damn, that is some fine work he did. I am impressed.

I believe that the 224 and 240 Weatherby cartridges use a belted 30-06 as the parent case. With Weatherby it's not a magnum if there is no belt.

Amazing conversion. I assume that the new rim is heated and pressed into place, but since
my Norweigian is a bit rusty (non-existent, actually) I couldn't tell.

Impressive work. A lathe is a really fun tool to have, and I love seeing what some experts can
do with them.

Gee, make 06 a straight wall case and put a cast bullet in it? Real 425 super duper thumper!! Don't think my shoulder would take it.

At large, whereabouts unknown.
And of course the Brenneke "TIG" & "TUG" belted bullet designs. They're a seriously old design, designed to limit expansion and/or fragmentation. They still have quite a decent following in many areas.

350 wiz bang (223 blown straight) or 45 Raptor come to mind .

Yeah a 1.8" case with a 350 gr bullet pushed by a case full of H322 is very authoritive on both ends . It's a rimless 460 S&W .

I seem to remember something about a belt on an 06' case both recently and probably 15+ yr ago but I have no recollection of what it was used in , I didn't read that thread .

Way back in my dim memory of many years ago, I recall reading something about belting a 30/06 case. That's about all I remember of it.

for a [very] short time in the 50's this was available.
see the belt on the top one.
it was put out by O'Conner industries and 300 weatherby type speeds from a 30-06 was the claim.

And how many of those loads Steelhead loads was a bolt gun supposed to survive? :headscratch:

I dunno.
I bet quickload would predict pressures better than I can, but I'd bet you'd have to push the loads into the 80- maybe 90K area to get anywhere close to those speeds with an 0-6 case.
