Tularemia--first found in Tulare County CA, hence the name. I stopped shooting and hunting cottontails in the mid-1980s because of this illness, which remains rife in CA. I still strafe jackrabbits and let the coyotes have an easy meal.
Oh dear God, Condors can't catch that from eating raw rabbit can they? ;)

Won't hesitate to eat a rabbit that I had harvested. I'll take them only in winter and carefully examine the liver for white spots (dead giveaway of Tularemia) or any other abnormality. If I see worms, that bunny goes to the carrion eaters.
