BLL added to commercial cast

image.jpg image.jpg One of my favorite Rugers to shoot is my Lipseys Flat Top Convertible 45C/45ACP. Last year I picked up 3,000 200gr SWC for a good price. I've run quite a few through that Blackhawk but after 150 rounds the barrel would start to lead. Nothing real bad but enough so that it would get worse without a quick cleaning. Today I ran 250 rounds through that gun with no leading. Only thing I see is a slight wash but no buildup at all. How you say? Why I coated them with Bens Liquid Lube! Accuracy was also better. This target was shot with the last 72 rounds at 20 yards standing. The first 6 cut a ragged hole. After that I just shot as soon as I aquired the sights. Also shot 45C in another Bisley and ran some coated rounds through the 480. So far I like what I'm seeing. One day when it dries up I'll get back to running these guns and loads out from 100 yards on my steel plates. It's a mud hole down here now.

I've never bought commercial cast. Glad you found a solution to make them work. Looking forward to trying BLL this spring.

I cast my own normally but a friend of mine passed away and his wife called me up about buying some of his supplies. I did it more to help her out than anything. Just wanted to share how the BLL helped out.

Gman, I have that same lipsey's flat-top in stainless with the beautiful faux-ivory grips. Love that revolver!

I have a "de horned" Lee version of the H&G 68 which is a similar bullet to yours but with a plain, flat base. I've played around with the crimp A LOT loading it in 45 Colt. Over the band, roll-crimped into the band, crimped at the top of the groove and even taper-crimped in a 45 Colt case. Funny, I just now realized I've never shot that bullet in the ACP cylinder, can you believe it?
I'm presuming you're shooting it with the ACP cylinder? I do use the ACP cylinder, but with the 452374 mould and some 255 SWC bullets as a "heavy-for-caliber" experiment. Worked pretty well with the 100 or so I tested......
Well, good on ya for figuring out a good use for those hard-cast bore-fouling commercial cast things! Ha ha!!

My Dads 45 convertible has tight cylinder throats which caused leading no matter what you did. .4505" throats and a .451 bore.
He reamed the throats to .452" and the leading problems went away. Accuracy also drastically improved.

I reamed the throats on the 45 Colt to .4525 when I first got the gun. Haven't touched the ACP cylinder, though. It's not as accurate as the Colt cylinder, but pretty darned close.
