Keith, I won't get into what defines a legitimate news source anymore, much less what "real" scientists or intelligence source can actually be trusted. But biowarfare is very real and the lab is in Wuhan and has been for decades. I don't think any of us expect any real truth from the Chinese.

I am far less concerned right now with where it came from than I am with preventing it from spreading here.
For most healthy adults it isn’t a disease to be afraid of. Older adults with lung disease may have some problems.

I'm pretty sure I can identify real scientists and legitimate intelligence officals. I'm also real sure I can identify dumbass politicians that don't know a damn thing about science or intelligence. To say more would violate this sites rules on political speech. I do not plan to comment further on this thread.

It seems that all the talk of it being a bio weapon is pretty lame.....as in it is a pretty lame weapon. Minimal effect on fighting age persons, as long as 2 week gestation period, at best (or worst) less than 10% fatality for elderly and immune system challenged people. Wuhan is a huge area with almost 11 million population, a transportation hub similar is size and function to Chicago here. There are multiple labs doing all sorts of research.
My bet, if it was a lab leak, was it originated in a veterinary lab, doing research on animal diseases since it seems to be a jump from animals to humans.
In any event it is all supposition at this point.

one thing about it.
it sure has opened up the conspiracy theories, and internet conjecture.

I have seen video's of people tied together being hauled into buildings [they looked Asian [shrug]
lame ass E-mails [that may or may not be true] attacks on the president, questions about the CDC, and everything in between it being nothing [almost a hoax] or the next Armageddon plague.
I doubt the Chinese are reporting the numbers correctly, and have clamped down like only they can, so who knows the true extent of what's going on there.

Every new virus strain makes the evening news as the end of mankind. Believe me, my head isn't stuck in the sand, I'm taking precautions and reviewing my resources, looking for ways to improve things. But some of these "sources" need to hire new writers.

Need new writers? Don't be silly, they are doing exactly what they were hired to do, keep everybody in a panic so they don't turn them off.

Biological warfare starts with all sorts of different nasties. Viruses are supposed to be a great mechanism for some of them. At least that was the thinking we were getting in training prior to me retiring. Bacteria is supposed to be easy to kill, viruses not so much. You don't have to go to the kook sites to find info on it's unusual ability to survive on surfaces or oddly long gestation period. As a killer, no it's not a super nasty like some of the Ebola type stuff that pretty much lets you bleed to death from inside. But as a way to develop a really nasty, long lasting super virus, this makes sense. I got that from BBC and an article from the German version of BBC, Deutche Vellum or something like that.

A very good friend of mine and fellow re-enactor in our Rev War unit who worked for the CDC for many years was talking to me one night after we had arrived in an Indian camp ( log cabin out buildings with a main long house ) We rented it from a state park for our "School of the soldier event" we did every year.
Making the out buildings habitable after a long winter of rodent habitation....well I just did not like that !
I mentioned hunta virus to him and he said not to worry! He said the virus breaks down quickly! He also said the Ebola is very short lived! by the time they tell everyone it happened it is over!
So I asked him what his most feared disease was he said hands down, the Swine Flu ....if it ever hits again! (A variation of the strain that killed so much of the worlds population during WW1) He said if that were to happen get yourself and your family as far away from civilization as possible and take your chances living off the land ( Your luck of survival would be higher!) that to me is a very scary scenario !

The news media lies to us in depth and detail several times during each hour they broadcast. I accept that, and give their information the level of importance that such utterances deserve--which is very darn little.

I do what I can to minimize contact with mangy critters during flu season. Lots of hand washing, and my preferences do not direct me into crowded environments very much--quite the opposite, actually. From what I can gather, that is about the extent of what someone can do to minimize the chances of transmission. So--I'll do those things and hope for the best--just like every other flu season.

One final thought--I don't think any nation on earth has as comprehensive and as modern a public health system as the USA has. Assess the rates of illness and death in the light of those nations' public health infrastructures before coming all unbolted over relative or actual death rates.

I'll just maintain my normal anti-social, according to my DIL, refusal to join crowds. Luckily I live in a very rural area and am retired so am only in contact with other people when after supplies or if talked into going to the golf course.

So, I'm not the only one who's anti-social, anti-crowd.
Only difference is, I can't imagine what it would be that would cause me to golf, and there are 25 golf courses and links (including world famous) with a 20 miles radius of my house.

Far from it. I'm not anti-social, I'm just picky about who's around me. There are some circumstances where being alone is impractical, like work. Now anti-crowd? Mea culpa.

In truth, I worry more more about the reaction to the scare from people, business and gov'ts than I worry about the actual virus. It's like having a big snow storm forecast- all the ninnies run out and stock up on water (your water flow will be the last thing to stop in most places) toilet paper and bread. Oh, an beer, lots and lots and lots of beer. I've seen what happens after a major ice storm knocks power out for 13 million people on 2 sides of an international border. I've seen what happens after 3 days and after 2 weeks. In less than 48 hrs you will have looters. In 3 days the store shelves are basically empty. In 5 days people go slightly mad. Upset the apple cart across the nation and shut down interstate commerce or at least drastically slow nation wide delivery of staples like bread, milk, frozen food (and beer) and people will go stupid in record time. That's my worry. Our bloved and revered Gov here in NY has already stated he's going to somehow take a proactive tack. Uh, talk about people not to trust with additional power! I worry about the people in charge "never letting a crisis go to waste!" I won't get more political than that.

What will you do on y2k ?
Put the pot on beans on top of the fresh stoked fire , grab the dog go shoot a few ducks , have lunch with the kids that hopefully stirred the beans a few times and get the corn bread ready for the beans . Basically just like any other weekend morning .

I don't feel good .
Chicken noodle NyQuil it is .

Wanna scare me get some Haunta virus going around . I've survived the last 6-7 pandemics . H1N1 , the base is only a real threat to 80+ and under 10 probably 6 yr as we all have antibodies in place from the last 6 .

I play golf because I can only shoot so much in the backyard before I start hearing 'I want to tend my flowers, or I need to use the smoker". Ain't no way I'm getting in the way of her using the smoker, I like to eat too. Where I am it''s a hundred miles from any burg with more than 15k people and 12 to the nearest 8k. I "play" on a small 9 hole cow pasture so I don't have to drive too far to blow up my blood pressure.
