I was gifted a pre-64' M70 270 barrel "the most valuable part is the Herters break" I have Grampa's M70 now which needs significant care cosmetically it's in 06' and I think I would just ooze love if it were a 280 with a 35 Whelen as a hot second . I don't think there's enough meat for a 35 but maybe . No the 06' OM barrel isn't a loss option it is unfortunately worth more as is than in something I'd really like so at a minimum the OM barrel stays OM . .278 is pretty close to .284 and I do have a 280 reamer .

Number 2
I have a 243 post 64' M70 that "just never shot well" .
If that were lopped off and made into a 20 ga bore liner then nobody would care how long it was and it could become a 6mm- 256 Win or a really determined sort with no fear of ruining a barrel might lap it up .01-.013 and repeat .....

Number 3
My latest why the heck not ;
A 450 whatever that is in the AR only using the WSM case head instead of the 284 or the BW rebated to 223 rim only to the full 2" case or to a .451 instead of 458 American . I like the idea also of that rebated rim 45-70 AR 10 and a WSM bolt face is cheaper brass than 284 ........ They all blurr together but I have a .451 groove blank and a Gew 98 action or an FN 98 WM donor or a Savage that if it doesn't come around needs a barrel anyway .

Drift away .

what I think you wanna do is lop that 270 barrel off, screw it onto option number-2 and re-chamber it in 270 X 308

The goal was to get to something reloadable actually in the 22 mag/lr class . 5 yr 2 deliberate searches and near continuous passive search for a 25 cal take off barrel to do in 25 ACP .
If I line the barrel with the 270 cut down I would probably ream it with a 6.8 SPC and a 30-30 rim for a Handi rifle . It runs into breach loads and stuff .

so your looking for a 22 velo-dog?
good luck getting those cases, some bulls-eye dude bought the last 10-K ever made just so nobody else could get any in like 1988-9 or so.

you could get a 22 take off barrel and get it cut for the 5-seven case and just run 2-3 grains of powder and some 35- 40gr bullets.

I have or could have a 8 twist take off 223 that could be cut at the gas port for a barrel liner too . I have a 6.8 ar take off also .

A ton of options I have a fitted 7×57 and a 257 short chambered A&B barrel for the Gew 98 action with the Jeger trigger in it .

I have a 24" 7mm barrel that could cut off and has enough left to turn , after removing a 280 AI like chamber with the throat eroded out to .301 , to fit a 325/340 in 30-30 for a 7-30 Waters and Ian could send me that brass that's in his way . :)

So the M70 is off the table . That's a good thing because I didn't want to do that really any way .

Most practical liner for the flawed 20 ga Handi then is a race for a 7-30 , 6.8 rimmed , or a 5.7 .
I have 6.8 dies , and 7-30 . I'm now in a region where 30-30 is readily available . It's a hard call between the 2 . The action has a 30-30 barrel on it so there is that too .

under 150yds. I don't think a deer would know the difference between a 270-280-300 caliber jax. bullet pushed with a 30-30 size case.

so you got it narrowed down to a model 98 action or the Handi rifle that you'd sleeve that has a 30-30 ejector available for it.
and IIRC you have a handful of others available.
I'd maybe lean somewhat towards the 7-30 in the Handi using the old 280 barrel.
it'd probably carry like a brick through the woods and be about as muzzle heavy as you could wish for.
or go the 5-7 route and have a pretty decent squirrel rig and run the 340 as the 7-30.
the 7 would feed nice, and you got no pressure worries plus you could use those fancy A-max type bullets.

that would leave the 98 for the case size it's meant for, negating feeding issues etc.
only problem would be those A&B barrels were some short meaning you'd want to throat for heavier 150-175gr bullets in the 7 and work around something like the 117gr noslers in the 257.
