When My wife and I moved to the area we live on now it was in the early 1980 ( sub division of her Dad's property) Back then 3 sides of me were heavily wooded & the fron't side facing the townsfolk. I came home from work for Lunch one day back then and was met with a large flock of Turkey...I said to myself ( like I usually do) "if I can get my gun & you are still here You are my meal!" I come out of the house with my trusty 22 rimfire and in the chamber is a CCI Mini mag HP bullet 20 yds away there is a nice bird broad side to me...I line up just below the wing joint and Fire! I see a disturbance in his feathers and hear the hit! He sort of just shrugs it off and take to the air! It had to have opened up on his feathers.....so Since then The 22 rimfire is not my choice for a turkey bird. Our season is over now but I worked up this light load for my 30-30 I will be ready next year. A 165 grain fn Ranch dog I have faith in
& Quiet!

I believe if I were having the issue I would go to a pellet rifle for head shots.
My 17 cal. will cleanly dispatch squirrel. Nice and quiet!

I didn't think you could use a rifle on turkey. I got in trouble last year (got my butt chewed by the game warden) for shooting pheasants with a 45 acp.

Sierra, I hate to tell you this but when I was your age, you were flogged for shooting pheasants anytime but on the rise with a side by side.

I was walking a ditch and shooting them when they would take off running (not flying) with a 1911. GW gave me a hard time. Asked about a 22 rifle, and he threatened to give me a ticket if he saw me out there with anything other then a shotgun. So I went and got a cheapo Mossberg 500.

I got whooped for shooting one in the air with my wrist rocket.
I can kind of see my pops and uncles point of view now, it was the only bird taken all weekend.
I had a license just no gun.
I was supposed to borrow one of theirs after they shot their limit.

That was probably the thing I disliked the most about my time in Texas, was no public lands. Sure, lots of hogs to hunt, if you had money to lease a plot, which I did not.

well in some places they are kind of like jack rabbits but with tail feathers and short ears.
I think we have an equal amount of both here.
only I shot a jack rabbit this year and ain't seen a pheasant in a while.
I guess grouse is about as close as we get only we don't get clear blue sky back rounds to shoot at them, you gotta twist your shotgun pattern around a pine tree or a quakie to get them.

Over in eastern montana, pheasants over run the place. I was hoping to get to take so time off and go do some hunting over there, but it didn't happen. I didn't even get to hunt elk here at home because of work.
