Fill the magazine or not.

When I go to the range or just out in the sticks to plink, more often than not I will only load up 5 rounds at a time in a pistol or revolver. Not talking about drills or training for social work here, just about having fun.

Frequently bolt guns are loaded one at time. Shotguns, depend upon my mood. Maybe it's an OCD thing keeping cartridge boxes organized with nice even rows of five. Or because I can grab the empty as it comes out of the rifle and not have to bend over to pick it up. Even with a 22 I find myself limiting the number of rounds I load. Although filling a tube fed 22 with shorts when the wife isn't looking and then spending the next 15 minutes shooting, while she watches and wonders what in the h.... is going on. Perhaps it helps keep me focused on making each shot count knowing that I have a limited number of rounds at my immediate disposal, plus I can spend more time at the range when I shoot slower.

When I was practicing for match shooting, it was normally ten 10-shot groups. That was a whole afternoon. Now it is more like two cylinders from the revolver, two magazines from a semi-auto and maybe 20 off hand shoot from a rifle. That is a full afternoon for me and my shooting partner now. We have to stop and rest and sit a visit for awhile.

my RIA 1911 38 super mags are a pig to put the last round in, so I never do.
.
I think I have another semi-auto that's the same way.

I'm not sure that any of the fixed magazines in my bolt-action guns even work.
