First go with the 300 BLK

I cast another 350-400 of those bullets today. Thankfully I have the #2 Rowell ladle. That long bullet would not be easy with a bottom pour. Being able to keep mould temp up by pouring more over the sprue plate is nice.

Yeah, the ladle is nice. Too slow for me, though, I still bottom pour them with a Lee 20 pounder. What sucks is running out of alloy so fast, my mould is a six-banger and five pours makes a pound of bullets. With a pot I usually have about 50 pounds in there and can toss in whole ingots periodically without affecting the temperature of the upper layer (from which I dip) very much. With a stack of ingots handy, full bottle of propane and a gallon jug of drinking water it's possible to cast for hours without stopping.

I don't have those problems with the 40 lb pot.
I just keep on adding ingots and casting till i'm bored.

y'all know Brass guys sells 300 b.o. brass for like $16.00 a hundred right? [169 a thousand]
it's made from 'recycled' 5.56 brass, and just needs the case mouth champhered.
i'll probably break down and buy another K just to put in the brass cabinet the kids are gonna have to deal with some day.

So, ummm....fiver are you adopting late 30 somethings?

It sounds like you live in a castle made of lead, powder, brass, guns, & other fun stuff. I mean I'm working on same but, mines more of a hut than castle.

the garage just got cleaned out into the new shed so it's back to being my shop again.

free bullet: I wouldn't go that far.
i'm down to the 3-k level of lead area, and i'm pretty sure I could cram another rifle/shotgun or handgun into one of the cabinets.
the majority of the house is dedicated to guns, fishing, swaging, reloading, and casting stuff.
if you stop by I could weld up another stand for the other magma pot, and you could see for yourself..
but I really think I just need a bigger house.

Bigger place +1.

I'd help you weld that stand if ya lived anywhere near Nebraska. I'd write my name on it in weld bead.
I really need an automated 9mm caster. Just never have enough cast. The subs for 300blk would be the same if I took that journey.

The problem with 300 BLK subs is it burns through lead like crazy. One pound per magazine. Speaking of welding, I really need to break down and make some snail traps.

Just out of curiosity, I bought one of the Lee 230-grain blk moulds. Measuring it today it appears that the front band and nose are both about .002" too dang small, but the rear driving band is about .310". I'll just have to cast some and see how they really come out. Looks to be perfect for powder coating

I have a plan for that, but it doesn't call for boring, it calls for milling. I still want a 220 grain mould to see if it helps with some of those oblong bullet holes I keep getting.

Two projects are going on here. One is to grind back the nose points on a few of my ACE bullets to the point that they're .180" diameter and see how they feed and shoot. The other is to shorten the bases and see if they don't stabilize better in 1-in-8" twists.

I'd be happy to make my little mill available to you if you want to mess with it.

Happiness today.
I had a 223 conversion kit for the 550 and decided to see if I could load the 300 BLK on the 550. Used the 32-20 powder funnel and it worked great.
Cases were already sized and cleaned. Dillon is used to prime, drop powder, and seat bullet.
100 rounds in just over 10 minutes.

Now you're cooking.

I shot a 50 yard group with mine tonight. That's right, tonight. In the dark. And the neighbors had NO idea. hehehehe.

Got out today and shot 100 rounds with the 230 gr NOE and 10 gr of 4227.
Accuracy isn't quite what I want but it is pretty quiet. Recoil is light enough that at 50 yards I can easily see the plywood backer fragments fall behind the target.
I did recover a few bullets and they show how soft the alloy is. These were going around 1000 fps. I will chrono them soon.

Notice on the banana shows rifling clear up the nose?

I used the powder funnel for my 30 carbine.
and pull the cases over my 3095 ball in the size die.

I keep thinking about trying to mill the base off my LEE too [just up to the full diameter part]
but it's working just fine at the slow end so I'm just making more, tumble lubing them, and then run them through the 310 size die.
I could probably skip the sizing part but I just can't help myself.
it just barely scuffs some of the drive band at the bottom [shrug] but they shoot in my 7 twist.
and milling it down would really screw up the cog balance of the boolit with that long nose.

oh I'm also water dropping mine, I don't know why I done that it probably isn't necessary,
but it seemed like the right thing to do.

I am planning to try some heat treated. Might not be needed but can't hurt to try it?
I want to add a little powder to see if I can get rid of the Flyers.
Glad I got the PB, a check would just add expense and it sure doesn't seem to be needed.

I'd try the hardening first you might just be getting some nose slump that is mucking your noses around unevenly.

I have about 300 pieces of 300 brass sitting right at my feet that needs champhering but these little cases kill my hands after like 5 of them so it's been slow going.
I keep telling myself once they are done they are done but that isn't motivating me any.

I use one of these from Sinclair. Holds a regular deburr tool and let's you drive it with a cordless drill. Takes the work or of the whole process. Takes the pain out too.

I have the rcbs power tool but don't care for the angle it gives on the inside champher.
I keep looking at the lyman cutter that has the slightly longer angle but I keep on thinking 13 bucks is too much.
I know it will screw into the rcbs prep thingy, I just get cheap when I look at it in the store.

maybe i'll get it tomorrow I'm going there anyway for a small mouth bass fishing seminar.
