Gevärsexerciskrut 1

"OK, OK, I'm going as fast as I don't want to go!"
Ok so when I went out for my "Christmas Eve Family Shoot", I also took the '03 Springfield to try out some cast bullets plus run some of that Swedish powder from those red wood blanks side by side with Unique.

This powder is known as Gevärsexerciskrut 1 or Rifle Practice Powder #1. Now, the reason I did this was because i have pulled down 10,000 of these rounds. Primarily because they were dirt cheap from J&G sales in Prescott AZ and because they were arsenal reloaded from range brass with non-corrosive Berdan primers. This left me with a lifetime supply of primed brass for my Swedish Mauser.

Now, what to do with something in the area of 30-40 pounds of powder.

I did a bunch of research around the net and gathered lots of data from the likes of Doc AV and others.

Some guys had ran up their load data and said that with cast bullets in Rifle data ONLY, they had found the numbers to be close to Unique. Others claimed it was a fast pistol powder but I personally did not have good luck in that area of testing. I ended up with unburnt powder and the velocity dropped when i was almost to the target base load.

So, going into the rifle tests, i had much better luck. In my side by side testing with Unique, i found the Swedish powder to be just a little faster but good enough results to use! This is great news considering the cost of powder and how much of this stuff i have stock piled up.

12 gr of Unique gave me a velocity of 966 fps.
12 gr of the Swede powder gave me 1200 fps.

The next step to solidify my results will be to run about 20 rounds at 13 grains and monitor the consistency spread.

I would have performed that yesterday but wanted to spend time on the family fun shoot.

So far so good though.

The target below is a combination of some FMJ for warming up the rifle, Unique and the Swede powder from the blanks at 50 yards.

One last note; many out there will claim that blanks have a flash powder in them. While this appears true as I have pulled down tons of Military ammo, this is NOT the case with these Swedish blanks. This statement comes from several gents who were in the Swedish Military and had access to this data.

Well, originally, J&G was running specials - 4800 rounds for $100. My wife and I made a trip out there just for fun and to spend the weekend. They were packed in the battle packs in small OD crates.

The first load was for a friend of mine because he wanted the brass and the next two batches were for me. I would spend hours in the shop pulling the little wood tips with a pair of visegrips in the press and dumping the powder into vintage powder cans.

Good on ya, Glassparman. Sounds close to Green Dot in performance......a little faster than Unique, slower than Red Dot.

With that in mind, more than one member here has had really good performance from Green Dot in 44 Special loads running #429421 to 850-900 FPS in large-frame 44 Special revolvers.

The only stuff I seriously have stock piled is IMR 4895 and Win 231. Everything else I have is a smattering of this and that.

Great to see a knowledgeable post vs. you'll shoot your eye out (sorry it's Christmas, just couldn't resist) /blow your gun up while seeking the Darwin award. Blah blah blah blah blah, just like a bloody wokie parroting what they've heard vs researching it in a bit more detail. The Sweds didn't load 100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 rounds, ok so I exaggerate, using the left overs and dregs of other powders or what was swept up off of the floor.

Read some posts a few years ago say it was a blasting powder or faster than Norma R-1. Blah blah blah......
Oh.... kay..... then why on average is there 23.5grs of it in a 6.5x55 case. Go stick 23.5gr of Bullseyes in an '06 case with wooden plug, bet they wouldn't have the cahonies to pull the trigger.

I don't have anywhere close to 10K, but I have shot it in several cartridges over a chronograph. It is slow-ish, One example is 7.5gr in a 38Spl working up from 2.7grs, with a 158gr SWC gave me a little over 700fps, 2.7grs gave 300-ish. And... a lot of unburnt powder throughout the series in 0.3gr increments, the lower the charge weight the more mummies. Tap a cylinder full of 6 fired rounds on the bench, you have enough powder to load a 7th. Cast bullet rifle loads in the 1600-1800 fps range, burn clean, shoots very nice, it does appear to be a bit position sensitive. Wish I would of bought more it when I had the chance.

Thank you for a great post !!

I looked in the GRT powder database for that powder or something that seemed similar and found nothing. Do your contacts perhaps know if there is a commercial name for the powder? GRT has quite a few Euro powders listed.

your best bet is to do a side by side with a known.
i bet green dot is close, and American select could be in the running.
not too long back Graf and Son's were importing stuff like AO, AS, etc. from Vectan, and IIRC one of them overlapped green-dot burn speed.
