prob 50-75 fps less in your bbl as a guesstimate w/ my load. but for my load, you could prob bump it up to 40-42 grns of powder and get the same 1325-1375 fps.

Ok, I know this is probably blasphemous but I have never loaded a single round of anything with 3031. Never.
That said, the Marlin 45-70 will be happy with so many powders it isn't even funny. I have used Benchmark, 2400, Unique, 4795, 4895, H322, Varget, and H335 and probably a few others.
Given a choice I really like H322 for loads in the 1700 fps range. H335 can give some awesome velocities at pretty low pressures.

Maybe it's the short barrel on my GBL but I can't imagine shooting the 17-1800fps 400 gr loads. The recoil would be just brutal.

Try a 405 Remington softpoint on top of a max load of H335. It will push 2100 fps. Recoil is harsh but damn it shoots good. Bet it would hammer a deer like no tomorrow.

If I'm not paying attention and just put my shoulder barely up to the stock my GBL it will give me a little tap on the forehead with the scope. And that's shooting a 405gr bullet under 1400fps. Also with a scope that has a huge amount of eye relief mounted as far forward as possible.

Brings back a funny memory of when I was about 15 and talked Dad into buying me a 45-70 handi rifle. I shot that thing a lot and never let on to him that the recoil bothered me.
One evening we were both hunting the edge of a field. He was on one end and I was about 300 yards on down.

About dark a doe popped out and I had to really lean out around a bush to take the shot. Boom and she dropped. Here comes Dad to see what I had killed. As soon as he sees me he had this look that something was wrong. In my excitement of killing the deer I had not realized my head was pouring blood from a scope hit over the eye.

I'd definately have to go to peep sights. I'm 6'6" 250lbs and I want no part of that.

A scope can be scary. I have one on mine and with a 420 gr cast at 1350-1400 I can hold it sorta loose. I have on two occaisions fired heavier loads and forgot to hold on tight. Twice have I bled from my brow from the scope.
Hold on tight and use a scope with good eye relief.

Watched a fella take a scope to the nose last weekend, he wasn't bleeding to bad.
I use a few nikon omega scopes due to the 4" of eye relief. 2-3'" of eye relief can be dangerous.

Nice shooting.

This might be worth mentioning scope wise for the 45/70 the way you guys are talking about the eye relief.
I just bought a little bushnell banner 3x9 with the mz2 reticle. It has a true 6" eye relief.

I'm thinking about picking up another one for my 35 whelen as i've taken a beating a few times from my varix11 while shooting from the bench.
It seems to be holding up and holding zero and even tracks great.
It's a lot of scope for $90.00 so far.

I use a VX-iii 1.75-6X variable. I love the low magnification for close up hunting but can increase to 6x for range use. I must like the scope, I own 3 of them. Eye relief is pretty good too.

i don't want much over 1450 in mine. going from the 405 to the 350 RD shortly. And prob only push it at 1400-1450, maybe tad less... I love the 45-70, and levers, and shoot peeps on all mine. Have shot some of the factory 3oos at ~1700-1750 or whatever the Rem factory load is, but it aint no fun to me. I have a badly tore up R shoulder rebuilt. My wimpy 1325-1375 loads are just fine and stomp a deer. and would a hog. all I need

I have shot the 350 RD with 24 gr of 2400 too. Shot pretty well too.

Recoil was pretty light. Like I would shoot 50-100 rounds in a day with no problems light.
I would estimate velocity in the 1350-1400 fps range.

I shoot 24 gr of 2400 with my 420 plain base so I tried that load with the 350 RD. Shot well enough that I didn't try anything else.

My high power load in a Marlin is 49 3031. You want to hang onto it shooting off bags. Very accurate in my rifle with LBT 400's and a tough alloy.

Many years ago when I bought this (my first) custom mold, and also new to .45/70, I asked Veral Smith about the penetrative ability of this bullet. He said "son, if you line up six deer end to end you'll never find the bullet".

I'm not hunting big bears so I am toning down the velocity appropriately, it was fun but it's just not necessary for large deer.

57 gr of W748 and magnum primer gets 1750 with 405gr......but that is enough for four deer all lined up.
Accurate and trapdoor pressures. That vel is in the 18.5" GG bbl, too. Would be higher in
a longer bbl, but since the expansion ratio is already really high, perhaps not much faster.

Plenty for anything that walks on North America, and probably the planet.
