Gun Grease

Oh, and regarding the Jeep and the Hemi, you are doing the right thing running a premium synthetic oil in those. I have learned recently that the roller bearings in the OHV rocker arms and also the lifters in virtually every Ram/Jeep/Chrysler engine produced in the last decade are pure garbage. I've replaced a lot of camshafts and rockers since being back at a dealership due to the rollers and lifter plungers seizing. If it weren't for the cats I'd recommend a zinc additive. Something a little more robust than a 0W-20 helps, too.

the 4.7 has that stupid 3 timing belt set up too.
they rely on good oil pressure to keep the tensioners pushing out at the proper specification.

I worry about dust and junk as much as I have to worry about water.
grease and dust or a tacky oil and sand is not cool,,, and worse yet is when it's like nuthin degrees.

I keep it pretty much straight over on the thin oil side of things.
usually applied with a finger and a swab follower, or a drip from an oil pen.
I bet I have more oil on the outside of most of my hunting rifles, and several of my handguns, than I do on the inside.

I can vouch for the Mobil SHC 220 grease. We started using it 2 years ago at the refinery on fin fan and blower bearings. Our bearing failures dropped significantly. Most of the new stuff they adopt doesn’t seem to make any difference but going from the valvoline wheel bearing grease to Mobil SHC 220 was a game changer and money saver.

I have started using the Mobil SHC 220 on all the rotating parts of hay balers and implants here on the farm. So far I have been very pleased with its performance.

When I have need for a gun grease, like on semi-auto handgun rails, I use Gun Slick.

Talk about gun greases and oils. Not to get off topic but use a moly based grease on the Kubota tractor especially on the lift arms for the bushog and front end loader aka bucket. So since I already have a tube in the grease gun a couple pumps into a small medicine bottle and will last a good long while for contact points on various firearms. Lubri-plate as sold by Brownells for M1 Garand and M1 Carbine. Lucas red-n-tacky for bolt lugs, and some firearms.
I guess like a lot of firerarms owners have a goodly assortment of greases and oils. back when we had our rifle range locally they used to host the Crawfish invitational a benchrest series of matches and those rifles got cleaned and lubed after each round. I had a crazy assortment of lubricants at one time. Now only use the ones mentioned above except for the Mil Spec grease used on the AR's. Ian,excellent post regarding gun grease and lubricants. Frank
