HOW MUCH AMMO (is enough)

Guess the answer to how much ammo is enough would depend on your point of view, your financial status, your reloading ability, and if you are a prepper. I ran across a Rudyard Kipling quote the other day, that I thought summed it up for me: "A man can never have enough red wine, too many books, or too much ammunition!".

Ran across the quote in a book I bought because of the title on EBay. It is titled "Deer Hunting in Paris", a memoir of God, Guns, and Game Meat. OR "How a preacher's daughter refuses to get married, travels the world, and learns to shoot!" A totally different book than I would normally read, but it is interesting, and good for a
few laughs.

Sept. 10, 2021 Steve left us. You are missed.
If or when I find a perfect load I will load a bunch, seems like I'm always trying something a little different, tweaking. I do have a small stockpile of components ready to go.

I'm a sucker for buying ammo (just bought 44 Colt for $20/50 BHA) as I have not ever lost money on it yet. I try to buy factory US ammo at the cost of the brass. Military stuff in the sealed can. 32/20 is my favorite caliber and I have about 1000 cases, but not a single factory round. I have 1000 factory .223 not a single reload. Like most, I don't know how many primers are in the shop and storage shed. But I think don't think 10,000 rounds of 30/06 is too many, do you?

Can't have too much ammo, closet space, or money. Computer memory is up there too. I can think of a few other things you can't have too much of but my wife would hit me......

Too much ammo or components? Ever heard of a woman with too many shoes? Same thing.

For long term storage I like to have a 30 cal ammo can full for every bolt action in that caliber. For semi autos (be it rifle or pistol) it is a 50 caliber can. That being said, I have 4 8x57's and that makes for a tough (read expensive) amount of ammunition. The worst so far has been a 30 cal can of 416 Rigby, the brass alone took a while to aquire, then to find jacketed bullets I could afford...

By definition a cast bullet IS a monolithic solid.
I set a goal of 1k per cartridge fate intervened a little bit , I found a couple of stashes I forgot I had all but 1 pistol fill out pretty quick , shotguns not so much . The rifles I shoot are a lost cause but I'm closing . 3- 4 that don't have a load and mentoring and hunting and honey do's and kids .......

Try as I might can't never have enough. I veiw 1k as a bare minimum & 2k+ a good start for any kind of feeder. I shy away from obscure calibers because of never enough syndrome.

Here is a picture of our truck in RVN. The floor of the bed is neatly stacked 30 caliber ammo cans, side to side and front to back. Before they went to Cambodia, they added another layer, just in case! He is standing on two layers of ammo cans.Gun Truck 31st.jpg

Wifey and I were talking "estates" day before yesterday. Our library was one of the topics.Got a complete bound set of Kipling from good ole dad.

Along with a bunch of other "stuff",came to the conclusion that the kids can "deal with it",haha.I'm gonna keep buying books, and enjoying them.

Not real good at ammo storage here, load it/shoot it...repeat.Kinda like candy?

Never did a weight comparison of my books vs my ammo.
Do get rid of SOME paperbacks, but rarely a hard cover.
I would guestimate that my library would appreciably
outweigh my ammo. However not about to give up either
one. Sort of a "over my cold dead body" thing!

Never got into buying bulk surplus ammo, preferring to load my own. Did however
buy 20 rounds of Russian 7.62x54 at a gun show to try in my 91. It had a yellow
tip, and I never bothered to see if it was for machine gun or not. However after
about 10 rounds, it is my opinion that it was probably machine gun fodder. It kicked
right on par to a light weight 12 g. shooting mag loads. I know that the Rooskies have
sold a whoop of the stuff in the big SPAM like cans, and that Cabela is still selling the
stuff.

never could figure out mil-surp ammo.
if they got extra why ain't the boy's using it to shoot more.
I remember them treating each round on the range like they were paying for it themselves.

That sounds like czechoslovakian heavy ball, that was 182 gr ammo going about 2700 fps. It was their machine gun ammo.

Need more ammo. Need more components. Need more house, more shop, more land, more time.

Don't just need more for me, but need to accumulate for my wife and kids.
