I hate hummocks

Looking for new places to hunt for Woodcock. Found a WI DNR area, Soilsexplorer says an area had organic soil, topo quads showed somewhat flat, aerial photos seemed flat. So, filled with some hope, a long time friend of the family and I lurched southward, with my Brittany Spaniel coursing the willows...

Things weren't too bad next to the creek, until we hit the edge of the hummocks, where we cut east. And ran into hummock hell. My quads are weaker after a half year of restricted activity. Fell down about five or so times, hard to get up when you are sorta laying on three different hummocks. My buddy cut me a walking stick to help with the hummocks. Really helped.

We finally churned our way to the pocket of organic soil. Beautiful, very little grass, mostly bare. But there has been so much rain in the south central Wisconsin area that the soil tends from just wet to sinking in about 4 inches... For the first time EVER, I took my side by side down, wrapped it in my Frog-Tog jacket, and put it in my game pouch.

If it was a dry year, I bet this pocket will be the Katz Buttocks. Much, much easier to walk from the parking lot, turn east on the road, walk about 200 yards to the edge of the farmer's field, walk south about 100 yards, then churn due west about 75 yards over some hummocks, and you are in the bare earth pocket...

I was out driving yesterday. Unimproved roads. The northern woodcock flight must be here. I saw about 12 in a half mile. Boy do i miss upland hunting!! Kevin
