I just realized

So....I just realized I don't own a 30/06 at this time. This needs to be fixed.

Probably top budget of 500 bucks. What do you guys recommend?

The .30-06 is a good cast bullet cartridge, if fact a great one and a cartridge that is not as appreciated anymore as much as it should be. I have a friend who has an FFL and it is easy for me to get firearms at a good cost, but I use the 4-pay deal that the Sportsman Guide offers. You must really check their prices, but often can find good deals at near dealer cost. The actual markup on firearms is very low, regardless of how big of a dealer you are. So getting back to the question, last year I wanted a 7mm-08 for my wife, really. She is not big on hunting and she has shown some interest. I wanted a rifle that had a wood stock for the weight, a good recoil pad and wouldn't cost a lot. So I took a chance on a Mossberg Patriot. Boy was I surprised, the fit and finish was good, the walnut stock was way above the norm for a rifle in that price range. But the biggest surprise came when working up some loads for her to practice with, that SOB is a tack driver. I know the cartridge is know for superb accuracy and performance, but it will definately out shoot me. It shoots most CBs & JBs at 7/8" / 100 yards. All this in a rifle that costs right at $350.00 with $5 shipping and they ship the rifle to you right away. You make the first payment at the time of the order and then finish it off over the next 3 months at equal payments. So for about $89 it is delivered to you in about a week. Of course it is offered in .30-06.

Cabelas just had 700adl's new fer 360 after a rebate. They look to be much better than in years past far as fit & finish looked to me. They'll have that again around Xmas I'd bet.

Psa has some on sale for bf yet. Axis 200-300 & the mossbug at 239.

I'm perfectly content with 308 though. Cheap 1xf mil brass -a shooting we will go.

I've got a 308, but it's a real better, and not all that accurate. Plus I have more then a 5 gal bucket of once fired 06 brass.

I got a 700 ADL at Walmart last year at Christmas for my Grandson and we are very pleased with it. It's a 243 and a youth model (20" barrel) but it looks good and shoots good. We paid less than $300.00 on sale. I also got one in .223 that I really like. I used to not be a Remington fan but I'm pleased with these two.

That's main priority right now. Won't be getting any more guns until end of next work season. I just like to obsess over them.

Um, no. What you ACTUALLY said is that you didn't have an '06 and "this needs to be fixed" and mentioned your budget, and asked for input on what we thought you should look for, which I find exceptionally rude because in fact you do not have the budget for a rifle at this time and all of those who have spent their time thinking on this for you and providing input have utterly wasted their energy. Words have meaning, and when grown men discuss their intentions and ask for insight, they should be genuine.

I declined my input knowing this, but only because I had been directed to the five-page sob-story thread of yet anther self-inflicted injury to your pickup on CB. Christmas is coming up, too, I hope you have considered your loved ones in your budget as well, particularly your "Thoughtfulness" budget, which is way more important than price tags.

Don't own a 30-06 and never will. Ranks right up there with the 45 ACP......o_O

A 308 will do everything a 30-06 will do, up a 200 grain bullet, with less powder. No grizzly bears, or even elk, in my neck of the woods. Although, I do have a 338W, just in case.;) I guess I just refuse to follow the crowd. Have a 270W and a 45LC instead.

One of the most surprising kills, I have experienced, is with a 243W and Hornady Lite Magnum 100 grain ammunition. IIRC. I was sitting up on a ridge and had a procession of five Michigan whitetail does about 100 yards away. Picked out the largest, and fired. Upon the shot, I watched, them run for at least a 1/4 mile......expecting a marathon tracking fiasco. Went down to look for blood....low and behold, deer was DRT.

If I were looking for a 30-06 and had a tight budget, I'd be looking at a M1 Garand from CMP.

Were I in the young man's shoes who started this thread, I'd be giving serious consideration to the advice given by Rick and Ian.

Maybe a tax return in 2017 will fund a 30-06.

I love apple pie. I also have never owned an 06 and never will. I also see no need for it. If I thought there was a chance (there isn't) that I may hunting in an area where shots past 200 yards was likely I would consider an 06. The only real advantage of the 06 over the 308 is better ballistics at long range, under 200 yards the 06 won't make Bambi any deader that the 308, only more recoil and more powder and perhaps the bullet buried a little deeper in the dirt on the other side of Bambi.

Damn. You must not like apple pie or Grandma either! :p

In order of preference......Lemon Meringue then Pumpkin. I'll eat apple if it's the only option, with Dutch Apple, getting the nod.

Only knew one Grandma, affectionately know as Baba, lived till the age of 92......I could only wish. I'm the only one left, that still makes her recipes.

It will probably be well after that. I should go back to work running equipment in March or so. I'll set a bit aside each check and buy a new rifle at the end of the work season. That's how I got my 300 blackout this year.
