I picked up a Grail Gun Yesterday...

Bret4207

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
Congrats! My Rossi is a 44 Mag and full house loads can be way too much of a good thing for this old man. I have a slip on recoil pad, but find it moves around. I tend to stick to warm 44 Spcl loads, much more pleasant.

What I actually want is a 357 92 clone, but they are rare here.

I dont have much need for "gull house" 454's. I have been using "Ruger 45 Colt" loads. But became nervous back when I bought a second Gen Colt... So I stopped loading hot 45 Colt and picked up a FA83 then chambered a H&R 45 Colt for Casull. So all warm stuff was in a longer case. No danger of harming a Colt.
Ill load warm/hot er. But I have a few 45/70's so dont need to duplicate that. ;)

Its a hunting gun for me. Maybe mild stopper rifle.

I sold off My H&R 454 when I bought my 450 BM Ruger Bolt. Cause well they overlapped nearly completely and the Ruger was a repeater...

Long n Short. Probably stick with hot Ruger loads top end. Ill load a few "up" hat ta see... ;)

Im excited its a real nice rifle. I already think the 1892/1886 are the opitomy of lever action design. I have two Winchesters one from 1920's and one late 1950's. Then had two other Rossi's. I traded one Rossi (45 Colt 24" octagon) to get this rifle as I bought it BECAUSE I couldn't find a 454.

I learned most of these rifles are now D&T under rear site for a rail!!! I was worried about my seeing the sites. But, I can see them OK. MUCH better then that Browning 92!!
Searching, I found a used NOE Rossi92 base on eBay and ordered it. I was talking with a friend who said he had a NOE base and found it very thick/tall and took it iff. So I dont want high... I found a nice maker who offers a dedicated reflex base. (NOT PIC RAIL) in Doctor or RMR config. So for 50$ I ordered that this afternoon incase (expect it to be case) sites are poor. I swapped a Bushnell trs25 from my PC carbine for a Swamp Fox reflex. So Ill have good reflex Red dot to try. Stay tuned.

I have a Rossi 92 Carbine in .45 Colt, older one, pre-safety. Nice little rifle, but the short sight radius and open sights really relegate it to short range, not much more than good handgun range, at least so far. I should work with it more. Never exceeded loads that were plenty safe in the old Colts, though I am quite sure it'll handle heavier stuff, I don't do that in the Blackhawks either.

I don't think its offered in octagon. Shame as a 20" Octagon would grab $$ from Me!!

The Rossi I traded was a 24" Octagon 45 Colt.

I have read not seen blued and stainless 16 $ 20" guns.

I have seen Stainless with rimfire style magazine tubes. (Tube feed & Side load like new Henrys)

Mine is std 20" Carbine. Only differences is rubber recoil pad sling studs a d screw in mag tube and barrel. (As far as I have read)

The WinRoku 1892 I have in 44 Magnum has no trouble letting you know that the primers functioned when the 250 grain round flatnose gas-checked castings run in the 1800 FPS ZIP Code. The 1873 with its 200 grain flatnoses at 1275-1300 is a whole lot more civilized, and that rifle is geometrically-more blooded than any other rifles in my safe. A couple of the shotguns would give it a race in that venue, though.

Have 16&20" 45 Colts blue . If memory serves an 86' and 13' made . Both have small mouths relative to the body dia , .450 grooves , and 1-32" twist .

I wish I had 2@20" with 16" magazine tubes for aesthetics , and a 1-24" or 1-16" twist .

19.0 H322 under a custom 350 @1240 fps MV made me buy the 45-70 . Also it was too long the Lee 458-340 sized .454 shot ok . Hold them under 1100 fps , basically any 250-265 over 8.5 Unique and you'll have groups to 100 yd . SWC even the 452-255 upset and tumble between 78&82 yd when sent at 1240-1280 fps with the warm 9.5 Unique that runs groups about 1"/10 yd from the RBH 7.5 " at 1050 fps MV.

45 Colt is plenty for me. Recoil gets a bit nasty with heavy loads in my Marlin.
At some point a 45-70 makes more sense.
Almost 100% agree. But there is room for the 454.

Now if ya wanna talk the 460... IMHO, Too much & not enough, at same time. I have multiple 45/70's.

the 460 in a 71 or 86 type rifle would be about right.
if it'll throw 400 or so grs. at @1600 fps you'd be pretty hard pressed to ever need anything else at 1-200 yd. ranges unless you were going after,,, well T-rex's or the like.

The wonder of the 460 is that the 45 Raptor is just a rimless version. Blow out a 308 and trim or just cut an 06' off at 1.8" . There's data for 325s ......or you can fill it up with 4895 , 4198 ,H322 , 3031 and do 350s + . It literally gives you a 45-70 in a short action. Of course there's the whole .451 groove but even that's not a huge deal.

“good handgun range” is not a bad thing. I am still good to 200 yards with mine. But I prefer to stalk in as close as I can before taking a shot where possible.
