Is it pewter?

Sounded like pewter to me also, and the solid bottom makes it sound different than a beer mug with a glass bottom. Most items though that were used in food service were required to have proof marks on them. Some are quite shallow or even inside so maybe look again. I have even seen a proof mark on the handle of a small cup from Israel.

"OK, OK, I'm going as fast as I don't want to go!"
That looks as shiny as mine Rally. I'll look closer but nothing on the bottom that I could see.

The more intricate the piece, the more likely the hallmark is likely to be hidden. Some of the Israeli stuff is really nice, almost too pretty to melt, almost!

some of the older stuff isn't marked, and much of it doesn't have a very high tin content either.
i don't remember when the 'standard' was set as to how much tin something called pewter had to have [above 85% airc] around 1900 ish +/-25years? comes to mind.
