Was heading out this morning and got a call from my gunsmith. It's ready. I had a 6" M29 that I had dropped off before Thanksgiving to have a 4" barrel swapped for the 6" it was wearing. Now, this is the third 4" and about the fourth 6" I've owned and a 10 5/8" "silly wet". Think I'd learn about long barreled .44s. Too cumbersome to move around.
Finished my run to the dump, picked up gun and headed home. Had six 429421HPs in it with Pat Marlins PB checks. Not sure where it would shoot so I decided to try close on some discarded squash at the end of the garden. First two hit squash about 1/2" apart. The other four decimated additional squash. Can't believe this. Changed barrel and sights still on. Went into the shop and the first thing that came to hand was a box of 240 grain SWC .44 Specials. I'll try these. Sat on tailgate of the pickup and plinked them at small piles of leaves about 80 yards. No trouble hitting them. Can't believe there were no sight adjustment required after a barrel change.
You can bet I'm a happy camper. Now, the 4" rides in a Levi pocket here on the place rather that a belt and holster.
Christmas came early./beagle

I bet it was ready a week ago and your gunsmith has been having fun with it himself the whole time ;)

Speaking of PB gas checks, you sent me some 35 caliber round-flat nose bullets with a smaller meplat, about 200 grains, with PB checks to try what seems like a decade ago or more. They made ragged holes from my .35 Remington and I always wondered what the mould number was, I think it was Lyman. I still have a few left if a photo would help.

I'd send one but don't even begin to know how to post one.

Just a common old Model 29-3 but man it shoots good. Probably better than my SBH./beagle

Under the window you type your post in is a box. "Attach files". Click that and your picture folder should come up. Double click the photo you want. Your picture should come up as a thumbnail, on the thumbnail in the upper left corner click post full size. Click on "post reply".

posting photos here is a piece of cake from a PC. Just click on "attach files" box below, on opposite side from "post reply" button.

edit: too slow

Does it shoot better than your SBH, or do you shoot it better? I had a great 44 Mag Blackhawk, nice dimensions, very accurate. . . but I shot my 44 S&W Mountain Gun much better, with any load.

Then I did the usual thing and swapped off both of them. Still kicking myself over that.

Well a head to head will be required I guess. I swore by the SBH bit it's going to have to strut it's stuff to beat this Smith. Haven't shot much the last couple years with either. Milder weather will see some use of both./beagle

You must have one hell of a Levi pocket, a strong belt and galluses! My I-Phone 7 pulls my pants down when it's in a back pocket. Oh wait, a Levi barn coat maybe?

Should add that sometimes the file/picture is too large. If that's the case, you'll have to resize it. Click on picture, in folder, and go to edit. Then resize image. Box with length and width will come up, put smaller value in first box, second will fill in automatically. Just remember to click save.

Nice Revolver. Good call on that barrel swap.

I consider any DA revolver with a barrel length over 4” to be a dedicated hunting/target gun.

A 4” barrel is the ideal combination of adequate sight radius and portability. The 6” barrels are just too unwieldly for most applications.

In all my years of prowling gun shops, I’ve noted far more used DA revolvers with 6” barrels that were traded in or placed on consignment. People seem to be far more reluctant to part with the 4” barreled models.

A 4" 629-3 Mtn Gun, a 4" 629-4, a 4" 329PD, and a 4-1/4" Model 69 are my favorite 44's. All wear Hogue X frame grips and have 30 to 34 ounce single action triggers All have Patridge front sights except the 329PD which has a fiber optic.
Health reasons and moving off the ranch has kept these revolvers quiet for a while, but spring is around the corner, albeit a long corner!

I have a 29-2 4” that 35 or so years ago I had it changed to a round butt and a coating that would with stand salt water. Don’t know what kind of coating it was there seamed to be a half a dozen coatings available then so all I know is it works.
Really like the configuration, it’s a shooter for sure. I’ve fed it a steady diet of SSK 310’s running on the high end of things. I will be going slow and a bit lighter going forward, but the hot SSK’s are available if the need arises.
Beagle you are going to like the 4” model. But you already know that.
