JES rebore question

I have a stainless Savage 30-06 barrel that has seen better days.Bought it used back when moly coated JB's were the rage. The bore was completely fouled beyond recognition. The guy said it wouldn't shoot.Deep cleaned, much joy followed.

But, this was back when we had cheap, plentiful JB's from many sources.I found VG accuracy and terminal ballistics with Sierra GK 150's at a touch over book max of 4350.Shot a pickup load of Deer and target practice out the wazoo.I got the best out of the barrel.Recrowned it once, bout halfway.

So,does sending this...practically wore out,barrel to JES to rebore/chamber to 35 Whelen make sense?Or just buy a 200$ Shaw?This will mainly be for CB's.

Will Jes put any twist you want?Which "may" be the deciding factor over a new barrel....which is whatever twist they are.

I'd go with the Shaw unless you want something special with twist or chamber.

The Shaw from Midway is a 14 twist.

Here's the deal....two of my boys appetites(which is spooky ironic) for .357 CB's is starting to ramp up.So,does a 14 twist 35 Whelen do well enough to bust coke cans with 160,180 cast bullets out to hopefully,150 yds.

This way,I can hold off on ordering a specific mould....got lots of 357 moulds, sizers,GC's.Since the boys are needing them anyway.

I had JES do a Ruger #1 .220 Swift into a .35 Whelen. I couldn't make up my mind between a 12" twist or a 14" twist. I planned on heavy bullets in the 280gr to 300gr range. I talked to Jesse about his 5 land and groove option which he said was similar in configuration to very early Winchester rifling drawings. I asked about twist and he said most Whelen's he cut 1 in 14"...... be he could do 12". I said how about 1 in 13"? He said sure! So that's what I got. The rifling isn't lapped so they copper foul a little with jacketed bullets but it shot MOA with some old 250 grain Speer bullets I had. I've been paper patching a 290gr soft gascheck of my design and groups are almost always with the shots touching each other on my 85 yard target.

A friend sent JES a Remington 788 .30-30 on my recommendation and got the 5 land and groove cut into .38-55... Not sure of the twist... I do know it is extremely accurate as well though. He brought it over and I shot some bugholes with it on my 85yd target. He killed several deer and a lot of hogs with it and loves it's knockdown power! Of course he has a stiff charge of Reloder 7 pushin' them.....

JES's work is excellent dimension-wise. I checked his work like a hawk including a 'pound cast'.

JES did a 1926 NRA Springfield Sporter barrel for me. (Some one tried to get the corrosive primer rust out of it by fire lapping, but only removed the rifling for the first 6 inches of the barrel.) It has the 1/14 with three equal lands and grooves. It shoots SAECO 250's and Lyman 3589's at 300 grains very well from 1250-1600. However 357156s' get opening up at about 1800 f/s. FWIW, Ric

14 will get you into jacketed territory with the 35 without even trying very hard.
I don't even know what twist my 358 has but I went straight to the book for 250gr jacketed bullet loads

Suggest you give Jes a call. He will def give you the skinny. I did awhile back when trying to decide b/n 38-55 and 375 Win rebore. He suggested a clone. Yet to get it out to him - to many other projects keep getting in the way. But should be very soon.

Yup,the Shaw brrls are pretty much no brains, write the check.I'm not quite ready on the project but, will definitely call JES before taking the easy way.

Might be a cpl months, long enough to start digging, looking for a used 35.The chambering hasn't really been on my radar, till the boys blastin their revolvers.

I think the SAAMI throat configuration for the .35 Whelen could be more trouble accuracy-wise with pistol bullets that whether the twist is 12" or 16". And you will get this throat unless you get a special reamer..... A close-up of the throat area in my JES .35 Whelen is attached. Now you get something bullet-wise that can seat to the rifling and you'll have a winner then! My paper patch for it is butter soft (10.5 bhn) as you can see from the dings in it; yet it is super accurate with super terminal performance at 2100fps.

My little Remington Model 600 in .35 Remington will shoot pistol bullets so accurate that I have used it on Prairie Dogs and opened a few eyes! Here, a very short throat as well as a 16" twist are your friend.

A very nice pound cast too. It shows exactly what needs to be seen.

DANG! That WOULD be a SIGHT! And the PDs never knew what hit them, I am sure. Can't imagine a 35 Rem on a PD! Groundhog of 'Coon or 'Possum or 'Dillo, yeah, but PD! WOW!
