that'd be for my dad.
he's only had English sheep dogs and golden retrievers since about 1990.
i think i finally convinced him on the Golden's though since he has stuck to the sheepdog's for the last few.

Ya know, I don't think I've ever seen an actual English Sheepdog in the flesh. And after thinking on it, I've never seen an ad or reference in any of my sheep related magazines or websites for working English Sheepdogs. I wonder if they still exist or, if as with so many other breeds like the Irish Setter and Cocker Spaniel, the work has been bred out of them for the show ring/pet market?

Well my Border Collie is a herding dog without a herd. Always gives me a kick when I get on my 4 Wheeler Biscuit starts herding the 4 wheeler and trailer if that’s attached. I jump on and Biscuit starts the clockwise herding at full speed, she heavily leaned over on the curves. I’ll start the engine and just sit there idling and she will herd until I shift into gear. Then she is in the lead to the cabin or wherever we’re going. It’s always enjoyable to watch.

Big dogs, not for me. Her sis just showed pic from today of split lip and chipped teeth. Dog knocker her over. IMHO, Aussies have taken over as sheep dogs.

I mean sheep guard dogs, not herders. I don't think English Sheepdogs were herders at all. Could be wrong, but I think they were guard dogs like my Pyrenees and Anatolian crosses. Coyote killers!

muscular and compact drover, AKC definition.
Actually looks like a sheep so it doesn't scare them. Fake leader. Where Aussie is a herder and nips and chases until the flock does what it is supposed to do.

the pyreneese are the sheep workers around here.
if you see one wandering the hills or desert there's sheep somewhere close.

the heelers and aussies are super popular though and it isn't uncommon to see some type of mix between them or a mix of one and a Lab.
the lab mixes don't hunt worth beans but they will move a herd of cows and do it with their brains as much as their feet.
the one i had didn't need any more direction than DJ the cows are out... go.

I doubt very much Old English Sheepdogs would provide much wolf protection..........based on the one my Alaskan Malamute grabbed by the throat and shook, when it escaped his yard.

Again, has all the work been bred out of them? Seems entirely possible.
