Leather ish questions

My Mom has an unbacked cougar rug . The move from out west was ok , but it's stuck to itself . It would be a shame to lose it .
It's a soft hair on full tan . It's original home didn't call for backing .
Any hope ?
Any help ?

The leather is stuck to itself? If that is the case, maybe find a decent taxidermist and solicit their advice. Sometimes changes in humidity will cause the leather (or more likely, the stuff that the leather has picked up over the years) to self-adhere.

Hide to hide I think .

Yes it's a nice piece or was .

I'm ashamed to admit it but I can't remember which one traps .......

I agree find a good taxidermist.
They will set it right. Might cost a bit as having it felt backed is the way to go.

Is it completely stuck or just in a few places? Moisture is the usual cause so moisture also can unstick it. I used to bark tan hides (some with hair on....which also dyed the hair) I had a few after storage that stuck skin side to skin side I just used my studio's commercial fabric steamer to slowly coax them apart. Steam will not hurt anything as long as you do it slowly ( so the hide does get too wet and don't rush and try pull the apart too quickly) It is like steam an "old lickable stamp" off an envelope! If you do it slowly and pull correctly...when it cools you can re lick it and put it back on an envelope! That is the stamp; not the cougar hide ;)

I haven’t had experience with a cougar since I was in my 20s?

Jim has a good idea there. If that doesn’t work I would look at a taxidermist.
