I am having a terrible time getting bullets to drop out of this mold. Lead and tin alloy of about 12 bhn. I tried smoking it with wood matches. Scrubbed it with carb cleaner. Temp around 700 degrees. Any advice?. Thanks. Even lightly used 4 ought steel wool...

new mold?
old mold?
have you looked for burrs? ...(eye loupe and cotton ball)
if it's a older mold and you super cleaned it, removing patina (oxidation) you may want to heat treat the mold blocks a few times.
Sometimes, you just need to cast with a mold for 3 or 4 or 10 sessions (complete cool down inbetween) to get a mold to cast good.

That mould has been demurred and polished several times and likes to hold onto its castings. What works is to let it cool between fills, which can be accomplished by putting the sprue plate on a damp cloth. Otherwise, it cast, for me at least, quite well. Btw, pot temp. shouldn't be more than 750 deg. F + I always used a ladle to pour.

I to use the ladle. Thanks for the info. I kind of figured I had to let it cool more..and temp was a little to high. That bullet shoots good with blue dot.

some molds can be temp sensitive.
sometimes they want more heat and then they drop their bullets like a hot tater.
[had one of them today, at temp you just opened and wiggled the mold, a little cold,, crack with the wood on the hinge]

other times you stand around like your waiting for a bus then they fall out on their own, they are a pain because they still want some heat to pour a good bullet.
got a 41 mold like that, if you try to dump the bullet out too soon it just tears the top drive band, if you wait for a 10 count after cutting the sprue they'll roll right out of the mold.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
Moulds are fickle girls. They want what they want when they want it! I'd follow Mavens advice. And remember pot temp and mould temp are completely different things!
