Lyman 358429

My grandson likes to shoot his great g/daddy's Colt Official Police in 38 Special.
It shoots 148 gr. W/C's real well . Fortunately for us , the windage is " dead nuts on " , the revolver with the 148 gr. W/C and 2.8 grs. of B'Eye just shoots a bit low.

Got the idea of shooting a heavier cast bullet. ( The Lyman 358429 )
( May work , may not ) I'd like to get the point of aim and the group together.

I also plan to load a few of these in my Ruger # 1, 357 Max.
Bullets today dropped from the mould nice and round at .359 ".

That bullet and 5 gr of Unique in a 38 case has been fired many times in my GP100

THAT is a more proper Keith #429 than my perverse edition. Your version has the front and rear drive bands nice and fat--good stuff. To hew more closely with The True Religion, that center drive band should be the same width as the front and back band, but it's not the end of the world by any means. The weight is right on the money, too.

Now we arrive at the heresy portion of this diatribe. Mr. Keith designed a great revolver bullet, no doubt about it. My own ideas to refine it.....lose about half (or more) of the grease groove and crimp groove while keeping the as-cast weight at 172-173 grains in the 38/357 version (429). Do similar things with #421 in 43 caliber and #423 & #424 in 45 caliber as well. We don't use bear fat for bullet lube any more, and Elmer's crimp grooves are ridiculous.

I was CERTAIN that the bulk of the praise for the 358-429 was just so much Keith-groupie hoo-hah.

CERTAINLY, there had been a better bullet for the 38s/357s since some time just over a hundred years ago!

I set out to prove so much to myself some forty-plus years ago, and I still just might find it. It's early.

That is one of my favorite .357 molds as well. I have had good luck with them in several velocity ranges.

As always, those are some fine looking projectiles.

The issue is for an area for the metal displaced by the lands to be pushed into, and not added as fins behind the base.

Yep, filling them up with Ideal "banana" lube from the 1930's was smoky, but accuracy was always good.

I've used this bullet in My Dad's 6" OP over Bullseye for POI at 25yrds and A heavy charge of Unique to duplicate the old .38/44 load. It's as accurate as the day is long. It may be My very favorite 38 cal bullet. At least while I'm thinking about it.

Understood, Ric. I'm not sure that is a critical issue, but Elmer did more experimental shooting than I ever did. In any event, crimp and lube grooves half the size of the classic Keith design could reasonably achieve that goal--land width and height being what they are in 5- and 6-groove barrels. As always, I reserve the right to be wrong.

I have crimped it over driving band before I "fixed" my rifle to allow its longer OAL to function. It still shot well enough for me.

I live almost close enough to Ben to be very tempted to try to sneak in under the cover of darkness and snag a bag full of his cast bullets EVERY time I see his work and pix! If I didn't think I'd get shot in the process, I might try it - at least once! lol!
