Lyman 358429

My MP version of the 358429 drops a penta HP bullet at 162gr. 6.2gr of
HS-6 gives a velocity of 1180fps from my 16” Rossi lever gun. Accuracy is awesome at 50 yards with factory open sights.

I have 38 / 357 penta point MP moulds.
Some say they can't get accuracy with a penta point.
Seems that is not the case at all with your experiences.

My edition of #358429 drops at 163 grains in 92/6/2 metal; it runs lighter than 'normal', IOW. My most-used load with it has been 4.0 x WW-231 in 38 Special. It yields 850-875 FPS from my 6" Colt OMT and is a first-rate varmint whacker. This same charge under Lyman #358477 gets to almost 900 FPS and hits about an inch lower at 25 yards given the same sight setting.

I have shot about 5 of '477' in 38 Special for every 1 of '429' over my 43 years of this addiction.

I hadn't considered dry brushing immediately. Thanks.

I generally always shoot some 357's with 38 Specials, which seems to lessen the carbon ring forming. Though... I've not had any issues yet, I do clean occasionally.

I have some C4 Carbon remover that is supposed to be great stuff for carbon rings, but I can't really say, I've used it, but I don't have a borescope to really compare.

When My Kids and I where shooting Cowboy 3 times a month, they only used .38Spl brass and dry brushed the cylinder chambers before their revolvers were cased. That was 30-45 rds thru each revolver each match. Plus more shooting at 3-5 annual matches and addl' practice. All guns were cleaned once a month.
I rarely shoot .357Mag loads in My M27 these days, but still have no problem with .357Mags slipping in/out w/o a hitch. Just tried some 110gr JHP .357mag loads in M27 & SAA. In/out no problem. Dad's advice still holds true 60yrs later.

Are you powder coating these. ??
I still am not sold on the powder coating. I have tried it in my 357. From what I see at 25 yards, the lube is more accurate..johnny

Just like any part of a loading. Change any part & results will change.

So taking exact same load one PC & one not and deciding PC is less accurate is incorrect. Would be same as changing a powder lott or primer maker and expecting no difference.

You work up a load with a defined set of perimeters. Change ANYTHING, and ya start over.

Good way to look at it. Never thought about it like that.
Thanks. All the more reason to dumb the powder coating. Johnny
