Ben, Brad… Fellas, I wasn’t meaning to derail the thread, but I do really appreciate the tenor of this forum. It is welcoming and for that I thank you.

Back to the Lyman ;) Like KeithB said, “They are what they are…” and I think that is the best way to describe them.

We are fortunate to have so many great mold manufacturers supplying our needs and whims today.

We are truly in the golden age of mould making. I have a feeling that MP and Accurate make moulds that are as consistant as is humanly possible.

I think the record is it took all the way to page 2 for someone to point out their recent problems.

fiver: Just havin' a little fun and learnin' ;)

Brad: Those are my two current favorites. As I am getting older I have been downsizing and am now down to two dozen molds and still feel the need to buy some more. Oh well...

we have a lot of fun here.
well I do, mostly I just aggravate Ben some and poke fun at Brad.
I keep my conversational threads down in the right section and they are full of all kinds of silly.

if you see a thread suddenly blow up with 3 pages of posts I can about guarantee it has a real good tip or three that has nothing to do with the thread and a bunch of poking back and forth.

The Lyman 358477 mould arrived today.
For $25, I'm a happy camper right now.
Shows little to no signs of any use.
Raining here today or I'd be outside casting with the mould.
I gave the mould a good cleaning and broke the top edge
of the blocks ever so slightly to facilitate venting.

I need another 477 mold like I need another bill coming in, but for 25$ I probably would have went ahead on this one too.
if I knew good machinist type I might even have them make a hollow point type spud that removes the entire nose and use it for a light wad cutter.

Erik in OR could do it for you.

Ben,
It might just be the way I'm looking at the picture, but it looks like the meplat in the left block has a wave in it or is not cut as deep on the right side. I'm just comparing the space between the meplat and the vent line just below it. Optical illusion?

At large, whereabouts unknown.
I usually just heat my nekkid moulds by dipping them in the pot until nicely hot (not fill melt temp by any means), and spray them with a fogging oil or something like WD40, and that gives them a nice sort of nitre blue color. The color is a bit fragile though. H&G used to test cast with their mould blocks and then clean them up and heat them up and quench them in oil to give them that cool "straw" color. I don't believe they were heated to the straw color phase, so if anyone tries this, please don't take it that far.

Finally got around this morning to casting with my ( new to me ) Lyman 358477.

This one must be an old one. Very round, cast at .3587"
I think I'll like this one !

that's the perfect size, just a bit of resistance in the sizer without it being too much.
big enough to take lube without letting it squirt up the side.
