It was a "good death"...

Dad and I bought matching Homelite super XL's 35 years ago.Dad has passed. My XL cut it's last load of firewood yesterday. The final cut was on some crotchy ,creek bttm Walnut.I was trying to be responsible, cutting a cpl stock blanks out.

Would have preferred an arse whipping than having to bust out the $$ for a new chainsaw.Walked into the local tractor joint, told them the story. They hooked me up with a cash deal on a 391 Sthil.Threw in a goody bag of "stuff".

So,we got two days of rain here in the Va mnts.Blasting the minty M77 ultra lite,06 ....killing coke cans takes the sting outta my back right pocket.Have a great day guys.BW

I thought you were going to say you sawed off the minty stock with a chainsaw. As a woodworker myself, I cringe at what people chop up and burn, so thank you for being "responsible". If you happen to run across enough "fancy" black walnut that I could hack out an A2 buttstock, hand grip, and carbine hand guard, let me know and let's work a deal.

We'll see Sierra,I ain't that all wound up about 77's.But....will go to the 2$ window of bets and say it is in fact,a "working mans rifle".So it is with the Sthil.I fully intend to run the living **** out of both of them.

Last saw I bought was a Stihl, a pole saw. A couple of months old I pulled the cord to start it and the cord snapped in two. Took the cover off to replace it, the cord wasn't much more than a string and the thin cheap plastic parts inside made me cringe. Went to the dealer for parts under warranty. Sorry, none of those parts are warranted. Was considering a new 24 inch saw and did an immediate reconsider of Stihl.

Ian,you just wait......

To see what this German POS has on it's plate. There's plenty more where the above came from.

Heck,I was on a high $$ job over the w/end....same M.O...creek bttm Walnut.Layin on the ground, being cut up for firewood.

OK Rick, just because you don't know how to pull a rope.....string,whatever

We'll see....

Just sayin, the 77 is already in working mode, cheaper than therapy.

What it was I think after looking at the two pieces was how short it was. Seemed as if Stihl only wanted customers with short arms. I made my own replacement cord from heavier nylon cord and half again as long. No problems with it since. What I really found upsetting about it was that it's not warranted even on a new saw. It's like Stihl knew there was a problem and they weren't going to pay for it.

Rick, will spare all the gory details but....

Having pert near factory support with BMW "go fast" motorcycles ....we've done "stuff" on their bikes that has in fact changed things, corporately speaking...

Like sausage, and firearms for that matter...once you learn to speak German,it becomes a touch easier?Japanese stuff is similar.

I needed to drill some line and t-post holes in solid, crystalline limestone this summer. Way back, at the top of a steep hill, too steep to get even a skid-steer loader. Too far from vehicle access to run air hose. So I found out about the Atlas Copco Cobra Combi gas-powered rock drill with built-in air compressor. Being six thousand bucks, I talked one of the local rental places into having a "demo" shipped in from Ohio. What they got as a demo was brand-new in the crate, never opened. They tried it out and had to work on the cheesy throttle cable right out of the box, but made and adjustment, called it good, and loaned it to me for a review. I never did make that POS work right, even after pulling apart the weed-eaterish carburetor and making sure it was put together right. After screwing with it for several hours and never succeeding in either making it idle below clutch speed nor making it rev enough to push any air through the bit, I gave up and took it back. I couldn't believe how cheaply made and sorry the parts and engineering was on this premium, German-engineered unit. It looked like it was a tool straight out of Harbor Freight, except it didn't work as well as most Harbor Freight tools do. Whilst rummaging around in the crate for something better than the useless, four-page German operator's manual (parts diagram would have been nice) I found a bill of lading from the shipper: Xing shonghang somethingoruther, CHINA. Nowhere on the thing did it say China, anywhere on the website, or any part of the equipment. Then I saw the same Chinese name stenciled on the crate, and date of shipment two months before. Wow. Just wow. Shenanigans everywhere.

Chit,I was sitting at the desk of the second largest BM dealer one time...

On the floor was the trans outta, their stupid $$ "roadster"....and,NO not the 40k ragtop. This was their 150k model.

It's got a healthy hole in the side...ooops.So,obviously being the, topic of their day.In my best bubba vernacular..."where's the drain plug"?

"It ain't got one" says them.

"So,whatcha gonna do"?Says me.

"Replace it,at 20k$"

German "engineering" stopped, best we homeys can figure....right at 2000,born on date.

the Chinese will build anything you want to any spec. you want.
if you ask them for cheap junk that's what you'll get.
if you specify X 'or better' you'll usually get better.
they don't even know what it is for or care they will just build it.

Ian sounds like you need a hammer drill and an extension cord.
a portable drill press, some hilti shells and all thread rod.
a hole coring bit for your 1/2" drill to drill a 3" hole 12" deep, that should handle the T-posts with room to spare if you knock the spade off them.

Offhand,in a drizzle, killing coke cans with the 77 @75 is soothing the ego.

The recoil may not cure you, but at least it will make the pain move to a different place for a while which with sciatic pain can be a marked improvement. Seems like the rifle shoots well enough, how's the scabbard coming?

Fiver, I got my little portable (wheeled) 2.5K genset and a HF SDS Max 10-amp hammer drill, and a 1-5/8" double-cross carbide 22" masonry bit and it does a 20" t-post hole through the hardest parts in about 5 minutes, 1 minute in the softer limestone. The holes clear well enough and a couple taps with the slide hammer after knocking off the plate and they ain't budging. Drizzle some dry mortar mix around them and done. For the line post I'm welding some 1.5" truck brake camshafts to the bottom of my pipes and dropping them in the t-post sized hole, welding tabs on the pipes so I can bolt together X-braces and angle braces without dragging a welder up the mountain. Takes me about five trips to pack it all up there, then I drill about half a dozen holes, throw a tarp over the pile of equipment, and get going the next day. Problem is I drug it all back down in Sept. before I finished and haven't been back to do the other 3/4 of the job. Packing 400 lbs of gear 800 yards up a 12% scree-covered grade is an "ego soothing experience" as well, but not nearly as fun.

No pain,no gain?

Some folks seem to know what that means?

And maybe in their minds,it is in fact "real".I broke my neck,literally....15 or so years ago.No lawyers....no money, just pain.It was God's way of wakin my chit up.Just sayin,we don't always understand what the plan is.
