Marlin 1894 44 Magnum...

Bret4207

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
I just read the American Rifleman article on the new Marlin 336 & the 1894. From the pictures they remind me of the USRA Winchester for fit and finish. That and the twist rate for the 44 is going to be a big improvement.
Last year I sold my Marlin 94 in 44 for two reasons, one I’m very happy with the Browning 92 and I have a 16 inch Rossi Carbine both of course are Winchester knock offs so other than the slow twist I’m happy.
But I think I could go for the new Marlin as it’s a big improvement in the fit and finish department and with the standard rifling and twist rate I could see a Leupold 1x4 mounted on it… nice addition to the small herd.
I like a long pull on my guns so Decelerator pads will be added to my 44’s. I just need to get brave enough to do an install myself. Rossi first as I want to refinish the wood anyway.
I'd like to add some length to my Rossi also. nice pad that was long enough to make up for the curve of the carbine butt plate would be the best way to do. If I ever get the energy! I could fix the Fox SxS 12 i shortened for the boys years back too!

i have that exact same leather pad on my stainless 44 mag.
it doesn't add any length per-se but it squares off the curve just enough to be about 3 times more comfortable with the stouter loads.

Well he WAS HAPPY...

So, I went to the range to meet my buddy. I had to load more 44s because he shot up every single 44 that I loaded for him…
Sunday, he was not convinced it was gonna be fine, so he wanted to shoot the new batch of ammo to make sure that it was OK before hunting season, next week,
We get to the range, and before I'm even set up. He's got like 16 rounds down range!!!! He's not happy. He's bitching and moaning, the gun doesn't shoot the shots don't group the same place yada yada yada.

I finished getting set up. I get the spotting scope set up, and start shooting again... I am spotting for him. The gun is shooting the same 2 to 3 inch group, that he shot on Sunday. But he's not happy! He was happy Sunday. He's not happy Monday. I told you he was a pain in the az Z!!!!!!

So we load up and head to The Gun Store !!

I have a buddy that got brain washed into believing that if a gun doesn't group 1 moa or smaller he is not satisfied. I have a different view point. Say I want to shoot a deer. I feel that I need to be able to place a bullet within 3 inches of where my sights are the moment the gun goes off. Where the sights are is my responsibility. If I shoot a group of 10 to 20 shots from the field position I expect to use, and at the distance I expect to have to shoot, I can tell if the firearm system is up to the task.
From years of experience, (either gleaned yourself or shared from you mentors), how far was the average range at which you have killed the vast majority of your game? In my hardwoods, the overwhelming majority has been about 40 yards. Therefore, if the gun I am taking into the woods will put every shot into a 6" circle at 50 yards, I will never miss or wound a deer IF I put the sights where they belong and do not jerk the trigger excessively. The cone of dispersal will have most of the shots near the center of that 6" group, and the lower number of outliers scattered throughout that circle, ending with the worst hits no more that 3" from my point of aim. Frankly, most smooth bore full choke shotguns shooting Foster style loss leader slugs from Wal-Mart or Fleet Farm will accomplish that. I have empirical evidence to back that up based on the dozens if not hundreds of deer killed with our duck guns back in the "bad old days" of no rifles allowed.
When I present such an argument to the <moa crowd I get the inevitable, "What if I see a big buck at 250 yards?" My reply was taught to me by a woman child safety seat installation instructor. When we taught these classes to reluctant parents, caregivers, and police officers, we were plagued with the "what ifs". Her response was, "what if a bird flies up your butt?"
