I wasnt looking. Well not really. I sold off her rifle years ago. She dosent hunt much anymore. Well she hasnt. But asked to go next year. IM THRILLED!! I stopped asking when it seemed she only went cause I asked.

Well, I stopped in my dealer and he had taken in this Savage AXIS II XP Muddy Girl in 7/08 in early summer. He had on wall and even listed on GB. No one wanted it. We talked about my consignments and hid daughter mentioned and walked out of the back with the rifle. He said to me a ungodly low price and seeing as I have $$ owed I took it.
Story is, he was ffl for a banquette raffling guns. The kid that won this didnt want it. So he gave him less than the whole sale value. Figuring to sell in the shop. Well after two weeks on GB he was disgusted and I was there!! I scooped it up!! It came with a 3x9x40 Weaver scope mounted

Got it in the house unseen. Tore it all down. AGAIN, the bases where not even finger tight. No thread locker and oil soaked. Cleaned & degreased all. Fit the bases to the receiver as there seemed to be a high spot. (Bases rocked) lock tited them down. I shelved that scope for another day. Grabbed a set of Warne low rings and a older 3x9 Redfield. ITS TOO SHORT!!! WOW!! Just by a tiny amount but even with front base reversed. Its too short or rings too wide.
I discovered hole spacing is same as Ruger American. So I chopped the one piece pic rail I removed other day off the 358. Bingo!! I had bases that allowed scope to fit! Lil alum blk on the ends made it look factory.

I thought had a set of dies. But cannot find them. I Found extra sets of 243, 257 Bob, 308. 30/06, 7 mag, 32 H&R 38 Super and even two sets of 7/30... but no 7mm/08. Grrr. Grabbed a used set of Reddings 25$ shipped off ebay !

I gotta say I am impressed with this rifle. Factory pillar bedded. Steel recoil lug. SOLID torque on action screws. Bedding was perfect. Was simular to a Remington in that it was round. But different as recoil lug was attached to stock.

Barrel was very rough. Fouled badly. It cleaned out pretty easily with Butches and a brush. Maybe fifty strokes and it was NOTICEABLY SMOOTH!!

Scope bore sited and ready. A buddy is dropping off his 7mm/08 dies in AM. Its pouring and supoosed to be till noon tomorrow. Ill form some cases from 243 as I have a ton of them and those should not need reaming. ( 308’s usually did )

I have plenty of 120-140 g bullets. Plus five boxes of my fav 154 RN. Ill work up loads around the 120 or 130 g. To keep recoil lighter. The LOP is 12.5”. Should fit her small frame great. Nope tjis dont back fire on me. Meaning she thinks I bought for me and giving to her. Gonna shoot it Sunday.

Sept. 10, 2021 Steve left us. You are missed.
Sounds like fun. My sweetie sometimes goes hunting as an observer, but has no desire to actually hunt.

A couple of extra sets of 257 Robert dies ? Where were those when I needed a set ?

I like 7mms don't know why ...... The Savage base is a good place to start . I don't know about the Axis 2 but be gentle with the forend no sling wrap shooting with them . They move a lot and very easy under any side load . My granddaughters have a Stevens 200 and an Axis the rifles are great the stocks are ideal for a 12 yo to fall in the mud with them in hand .

The Savage barrel I had would come about .005" of chambering a sized .308 case. .317" chamber neck. It would swallow reformed .308 with a lot of room to spare.

short action high pressure 7 mauser.
kind of the 308 to the 0-6 analogy.
but it will sure put deer down.
I know why I like the 7mm's, they perform like I want a bullet to perform.
2 holes, the second one isn't too big, you don't have to look very far for what you shoot, and they will work just as well on an elk as they do on a Deer.

If I was starting over again....my first rifle would be a 7-08 instead of my 308W. I think it may just be the perfect deer cartridge. (using jacketed bullets).

I shot this rifle yesterday. 4 shots to zero @ 50 and I flat knew it was a shooter cause the adjustments marched across the paper.

Three at 100.... Thats the 5,6&7th shots ever outta the tube looked like this.

I had just loaded a box with 20remaining Sierra 150 match HP bullets to have blastin/sighting/ breakin ammo before starting ladders. WOW, just WOW. The trigger was very nice, suprizing me each time.

Momma will be very happy!

Wish my wife was interested in hunting, but then maybe it's safer for me that she doesn't know which end of a rifle is which.
My 7-08 is a SC made Win M70 Fwt, a pretty nice rifle that hasn't seen much use the last few years. I've kind of been on a medium case size 25 caliber kick, really like the 257 Roberts and 250-3000, especially for deer and antelope. Anyway I drug the 7-08 out of the safe last week and worked up a load with the 139 gr Hornady flat base sp bullet. Ended up with 47 gr Big Game, CCI 450 Mag primers at 2.26" seating depth with the old Stoney Point (now Hornady) measuring system. Last two 3 shot groups went 3/4 and 7/8 ctc with the Leupy VXIII 2.5-8 glass. That should do for about anything I'll ever use it on. I ahven't put it over the chronograph yet, but should be over 2800 fps. It does pretty well with the 120 Ballistic tips for lighter recoil too.

Mommas rifle got a UPGRADE TODAY!!!

I made a GREAT SCORE!!

I have wanted to buy a stock for my Sandras Savage Bolt. Pretty much knew cause she isnt really "pink friendly" and the LOP is short.

I also have been kickin the idea of buying another Savage 110 in 243.
Mixed reasons... I dont need of coarse... :4:

I just always wanted a 110 this one is a NICE FIGURED Walnut stock and remove-able mag ALA Win 52... $349

Well, It sold last week. SO, I decided to spend the $$ on Mommas stock.

But today @ another friends gun shop place, I found a "used" Boyds Charcoal Laminate in the corner (same as I wanted) In a short action Savage Axis. Tagged 75$. HALF new and not a mark on but recoil pad screws are stripped. (Its wood! NOTHING to fix) at the register he rings up 45$... ♥♥

I need ta paint the magazine base...

Its a Boyds Classic stock. It would not have been my first choice as I like a higher comb. But its a higher comb anyhow good recoil mitigation stock Super happy with this!!!

Back home, it was a DROP IN FIT!!!!! I did have ta remove and sand out mag well and file out back so magazine fit better. Five minutes work.

We bought my great grand daughter a Savage Axis in 7-08 last summer.
She insisted on a wooden stock so we ordered her one with a factory wood stock.
It is probably one of the most accurate off the shelf guns, if not the most, I have seen.
She got her first deer with it last fall, a forked horn.
The only cast load I have tried in it is a Saeco 145 gr bullet with IMR 4198.
It shoots one hole groups with this load at 50 yds.
I haven`t shot this load at 100 yet.
