Ben, I cast for and shoot a 50-45, it's a 350 gr from buffalo arms, if gets interested in less recoil he might want to try one

I thought the 50-110 used an "express" bullet. Will the barrel stabilize a 500 gr bullet?
You make a good point here Freischutz....

About 15 years ago we were at the Salmon range. Three of us were talking about a component order I was getting together. A fellow we didn't know ask us about it. He was a nice old gentleman so I took his order. He gave me a phone number....

When the order came in I called this guy none of us really knew. He lived up the Bar in Salmon so I told him I'd bring him his order. No one answered the door! But a voice from a big shed spoke.... "I'm out here Pete."

We shook hands and no sooner than we spoke he went back to get his checkbook. I was looking at an old '86 above the door. The wood was gone and the thing was rusted like it had been underwater for decades. He saw me looking at it when he returned... but didn't day anything.

"Man.... that '86 is in some mighty tough shape!" I said as he watched me.

"I'm impressed! You're the first that knew what it was!" The ol' boy went on to say a friend found it in Lick Creek a couple years ago and gave it to him.

"You like Model 86's Pete?" I nodded I did. "Let me show you one in better shape then!"

The ol' boy unlocked a big cabinet full of guns. He handed me an '86. It was an early one but it was pristine. I stared at the barrel stamped ".50-100"

"WOW! This is that .50-110 they made just a few years for heavier bullets!" The ol' boy just smiled as he nodded his head.

I looked down the bore.... It was almost perfect! On a whim I just spit out...... "I bet ol' Elmer Keith would have slobbered down his shirt if he had seen this!"

"He did see it...... He might have slobbered some too!"

"What happened?" I asked

"He tried to buy it."

"And?" I asked.

"Elmer's price never did catch up to mine!"

The ol' boy went on to tell me (and the reason for this post) that Elmer had said the .50-110 had a 1 in 60" twist and Winchester brought out the .50-100 cartridge with a 450 gr bullet. The same case was used for both. Elmer said the .50-100 had a 1 in 24" twist.

Some is written today that the .50-110 had a 1 in 48" twist...... But I'll go along with Elmer on this.

I've been sorry ever since I didn't bargain on that pristine '86........ I could have sold my truck I guess.

A Model '86 Deluxe in 50-100-450 and in 80% condition could be worth north of $20,000. Same rifle with the takedown feature and in 90% condition could go to $40K or better.
