Mould Storage Re-Arrangement

There are certainly disadvantages to living in Kalifornistan AKA Gavin The Magnificent's Carjacker Theme Park--but climate is NOT one of those. Not only are temps mild, but the deserty portions like Redlands (where Buckshot and I are residing) have very dry air and are seldom humid. This trait makes the place PERFECT for storing iron and steel moulds (and other tooling).

My separable mould blocks get stored in Plano soft tackle bag plastic flip-top compartmented boxes. Some recent additions to the fleet have caused over-crowding in the 15-compartment box that contained the .311"-.316" blocks. I spent a couple hours yesterday creating two boxes from the former one+ box of toys. They are now broken down from .311" to .313", and .314" to .350". Yes, I have LOTS of 32 caliber pistol/revolver moulds.

Block storage is not my problem. However, block/handle combo storage IS my problem! I have a BUNCH of molds (Lee and Lyman/Ideals) that have handles (not bought a lot of handles, but got a lot of the combos and extra handles from a cpl estate sales). AND - I leave the mold/handle combos together as I hate putting a handle on to cast every time!

SO, how does everyone store their block/handle combos? Thanx

I use mechanic tool boxes. I have a stack of 3 Craftsman mid boxes with dividers and cushion in the bottom. Holds about 60 or 70 at this time. I have handles on almost all molds. I hate changing handles.

Today the sun is out, first time in about a week.
You can WATCH unprotected ferrous metal rust around here !

I'm over 20" of precipitation for 2021 (some of that was snow & ice - not sure if the numbers are correct) but it has been WET.
The ground couldn't hold another drop of water. Farmers are trying to feed cows and sinking tractors in the process.

How about vertical storage. 20 mm ammo can, added dividers to form deep pockets in which the molds can be placed face down with the handles up. Still have my "rust" molds stored that way and never had a mold rust. The aluminum molds are stored in the Lee boxes and stacked on a shelf.

I'm tired of dealing with too many moulds and am preparing them for auction. I have been storing them in Plano boxes with VCI paper, but it's still a hassle to store all of this stuff I'm not using.

I also was tired of molds everywhere so I bought two of the Plano Rustrictor 3700s. Deep enough for molds and supposedly the plastic has rust prevention properties. Either way, I keep long term mold storage in these boxes on my shelf in my home office.

the rust protector ones have rubber seals and little plastic water sucker upper thingies that clip in on a divider.
they can be dried out as needed.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
I use a dead upright freezer with a 45 watt lightbulb wired in down near the bottom. It works good as long as you don't store other stuff in there like I did and inadvertently introduce moisture into the mix.

I have been real lucky moisture wise. I havent had issue. (Knock wood)

That "tackle nox" tote I found at HD is about perfect for all but the 5/6 cav molds. Its "wastful" for the Lyman 4cav cause of that upturned spure plate. But they fit too. Its perfect for up to 4 cav NOE/Areso al/Accurate/MP molds and of coarse all the 1/2 cav molds I have used/seen. Its adjustable for size one dim with removable dividers. It was 20$ ish has two levels and stores dozens of molds in its two levels. It is Blk plastic and clear lit hefty latches and handle. It is a HUSKY brand.

Dang John, you make me ashamed of myself. I just pile all of them that are mounted on handles on a shelf. I did go through all my Lyman/Ideal onesies and twosies and put them in individual plastic baby food containers with lids, so some progress has been made against entropy.
